Chapter 148 She Knows Something’s Up
Chapter 148 She Knows Something’s Up
“I heard tomorrow’s the day you’re scheduled to check on Grandpa?”
Marcus‘ voice on the other end of the line was deep and unreadable, betraying nothing of what he felt.
Natalie gave a small nod. “Yes.”
“When are you going over?”
At that, her heart skipped a beat, like it had missed its rhythm entirely.
She didn’t know why, but at that moment, the thought of seeing him filled her with unease.
“I’m not sure yet; maybe in the morning, maybe the afternoon…”
She didn’t even get to finish before his voice cut through hers, firm and sharp. “Give me a specific time.”

“Mr. Collins, are you planning to visit Mr. Gabriel? That shouldn’t conflict with my checkup. You can visit him anytime you want-”
“I want to see you.”
His voice was low and steady; there wasn’t an ounce of hesitation.
Natalie’s lashes fluttered wildly.
She hadn’t expected him to say something so blunt; in that instant, she suddenly understood why he and Ruben got along so well.
After a brief pause, she finally answered, “Evening.”
“Then why did you just say morning or afternoon? Were you deliberately avoiding the time I’d be there?” Marcus‘ tone carried a trace of irritation. “Ms. Foster, do you really not want to see me that badly?”
“No, Mr. Collins, you’re overthinking it. I just have other things to do. I need to go.”
Natalie didn’t give herself even a second to hesitate before hanging up the call.
She stood by the door for a long time, forcing her emotions to settle, until her heartbeat finally calmed.
The next day, she felt restless all day long; just the thought of seeing him that evening left her unsettled.
Time seemed to blur until suddenly it was dusk.
Taking a deep breath, Natalie grabbed her medical kit, steeled herself, and drove to the Collins family’s old estate.
Even before stepping inside, she spotted the Maybach parked out front.
Her grip on the steering wheel tightened involuntarily; her expression hardened.
Once inside, she glanced around, but the man was nowhere in sight.
Thinking he might be in the old man’s room, she pushed the door open–only to find the butler and Stella inside.

“You’re here?”
Stella’s voice was calm but low; her eyes lingered on Natalie, scrutinizing her from head to toe.
Natalie looked at her a moment longer, uneasy. Something about Stella’s gaze felt different, but she couldn’t pinpoint exactly what
it was.
When the checkup was done, Stella asked, testing the waters, “How is he doing?”
“Stable, for now. Keep following the regimen I outlined. With time, he should continue to improve.”
Natalie straightened from the bedside and began packing up her medical kit.
“All right.” Stella studied her for a moment, then said evenly, “Why don’t you stay for dinner tonight?”
Natalie’s heart leapt to her throat.
If she stayed, she’d almost certainly run into Marcus.
“I can’t,” she said without hesitation. “I have other things to take care of tonight.”
Stella nodded slowly, a thoughtful look in her eyes. The moment Natalie stepped out, Stella followed her quickly.
