Natalie thought, with no small amount of relief, that at least Stella hadn’t seen them kissing or anything worse.
She decided to tell the truth. “That day, Jackson and I got into an argument. He lost his temper in the room and put his hands on me he was choking me. Marcus interrupted. He must’ve been worried about me, so he came in to check?
Stella’s gaze darkened even further.
The way she looked at Natalie still carried a flicker of doubt, as though she didn’t quite believe her.
Natalie let out a cold laugh. “What is it you think, Madam Stella? That there’s something else between Marcus and me?”
“Madam Stella? You and Jackson aren’t divorced yet. Shouldn’t you be calling me ‘Mom‘?”
“In my mind, we stopped being husband and wife a long time ago; he’s the one who keeps dragging out the divorce.” Natalie’s voice was cool, detached. “So what I call you really doesn’t matter, does it?”
“You-”
Fury flushed across Stella’s face, her composure slipping.
“I have other matters to attend to. If you’ll excuse me.”
With that, Natalie turned sharply and headed for the stairs.
From the moment she’d arrived to the moment she prepared to leave, she hadn’t seen Marcus anywhere. She assumed he must not be home; maybe his car had just been left there temporarily.
But as she reached her own car, the rear door of the Maybach ahead of her swung open.
The moment she saw him, she froze. Has he been sitting there this whole time?
Marcus strode toward her, his steps quick and purposeful. “How did the checkup go?”
Meeting those clear, steady eyes, Natalie swallowed without meaning to.
After a brief pause, she answered softly, “His condition’s mostly stable now, but he still needs regular follow–ups. I’ll keep coming by as scheduled.”
The man said nothing, his gaze fixed on her, unreadable.

Natalie hesitated before asking, “Have you been sitting in the car this whole time? You didn’t go inside to see your grandfather?”
“I came by this afternoon. Two minutes before you arrived, I got in the car.”
His voice was calm; his eyes, softer now.
Natalie gave a faint nod and reached for her car door.
The next second, his broad hand swung it shut. “Ms. Foster, don’t you still owe me a meal?”
Natalie blinked, momentarily thrown.

Her mind raced; she remembered, belatedly, promising him dinner before.
She did still owe him that meal, she just hadn’t expected him to bring it up now, of all times.

She hesitated, ready to say something, but Marcus was quicker. “You’re not about to feed me some excuse like ‘I don’t have time today‘ or ‘maybe next time,‘ are you?”
Natalie went speechless, unsure how to respond.
Marcus‘ eyes narrowed slightly as he studied her face; it was clear he’d guessed exactly what she’d been thinking
“Give me your keys.”
He held out a hand, his tone flat but firm.
Natalie blinked, startled. “Why?”
“We’re having dinner. In your car.”
She lifted her gaze, curiosity slipping into her expression. “What about your car?”
“James is inside. He’ll drive it back.” His voice was steady, his face unreadable.
Natalie mulled that over, then handed him the keys.
When she opened the rear door to slide into the back seat, his deep voice rolled from the driver’s side. “Sit up front.”
