Natalic grabbed her bag and phone and stood to leave.

“I’ll walk you out.” Marcus rose as well, picking up his suit jacket.

But Marcus took her hand and led her firmly toward the door. “Adelyn, we’re leaving.”

Adelyn watched them go, her hand tightening around her fork until her knuckles were white. The first time she had seen Natalie in prison, she had noticed it–the way Marcus looked at her was different. And now, he was walking out on her, right in front of her face. Their relationship was clearly not as simple as it seemed.

They walked toward her apartment building in near–total silence. It wasn’t until they reached her front door that Marcus finally spoke. “You’re still hungry, aren’t you?”

Natalie looked up, meeting his deep gaze. “I’m full.”

A moment later, her stomach let out an embarrassing growl, betraying her lie. She wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole.

until A low laugh rumbled in his chest as he stepped closer. Natalie instinctively backed away she was pressed against her front door. He braced a hand on the door beside her head, looking down at her. “If you didn’t want to have dinner with her, why did you agree?”

So, he had seen right through her. But Adelyn was the woman he loved. How could she have been rude to her in his presence?

Natalie changed the subject. “It’s getting late. You should go.” She sidestepped, slipping out from under his arm.
