I don’t have the time or patience for this. Just sign the papers; stop dragging this out,” Natalie said, her voice cool and detached. If you’re worried about Grandpa’s health, worried he won’t be able to handle the truth, then don’t tell him for now; just come with me and get the divorce certificate first.

You want me to lie to him?Jackson shot back, his voice sharp and laced with anger. You might be able to do something like that, but I can’t.

His expression darkened; his tone dripped with cold displeasure.

As long as it means getting a divorce from you, I can do anything,Natalie said without hesitation, yanking her wrist out of his grip. She turned sharply and strode toward the walkin closet.

At that moment, Marcus had only intended to head downstairsbut instead, he caught every word of their exchange.

The corners of his mouth curved into the faintest hint of a smile.

When the sound of footsteps came from inside, he finally headed down.

Jackson had just opened the bedroom door when he caught sight of Marcusback as he

descended the stairs.

Then, a familiar voice rang out. Daddy, today’s my graduation ceremony. Is Ms. Victoria coming? I called her, but she didn’t answer

At the sound of his son’s voice, Jackson instinctively glanced toward Marcusretreating figure. Once he was sure Marcus wasn’t turning back, he said evenly, I’ll call Ms. Victoria later, okay?

Really? Thanks, daddy!Aiden’s face lit up with excitement. Mom doesn’t have to come, but Ms. Victoria has to. You have to make sure she’s there, okay?

You don’t want your mom there? You’d rather Ms. Victoria come?Jackson lowered his voice deliberately as he asked.

Aiden pouted, then muttered, If mom comes, she’ll just embarrass me. Ms. Victoria is different, she’s a famous actress, an awardwinning one. If she shows up, my classmates will be so jealous

Jackson lowered his gaze to his son, but didn’t say another word.

Even through the closed door, every word of their conversation reached Natalic.

As she sorted her clothes, her reflection in the mirror stared backbeautiful, but with the corners of her lips curled into a bitter, mocking smile.

She had already seen through their thoughts.

Her son’s feelings were nothing more than a reflection of Jackson’s.

Looking back on everything from the past, she found it all the more laughable.

The child was still so young, yet already had such twisted ideasand Jackson never corrected him, never guided him, just let him behave however he wanted.

There was only one reason for that, because Jackson thought the same way.

After packing up, Natalie went upstairs to check on Gabriel. Once she was sure his condition was stable, she gathered her medical kit and headed downstairs.

When she reached the first floor, Marcus was nowhere to be seen; his car was gone from the driveway, meaning he’d already left.

Jackson and Aiden had also gone.

Ms. Foster.

A familiar voice made her look up, startled, and she saw James standing by the door.

James?she blinked. What are you doing here?

I came to pick up Mr. Collins this morning. He told me to stay and wait for you; said it’s hard to get a cab here and asked me to drive you,” James explained politely, his tone warm.

Her hand tightened slightly around the strap of her medical bag.

She hadn’t expected that man to think so far ahead, to arrange for his assistant to drive her.

Maybe it was his way of thanking herfor rushing over yesterday, dropping everything, to treat Gabriel.

And it was true; this early in the morning, up here in the hills, getting a cab would be nearly impossible.

Natalie offered a small smile. Thank you, James. I appreciate it.”
