Chapter 56 Torn Between
“There’s nothing more to say. If you want to see her, I’ll bring her by another day.”
Marcus’s tone was indifferent as he leaned back in his chair, his voice low and steady.
Gabriel cleared his throat. “If she’s only a goddaughter, then she must have parents. Why has Natalie been the one looking after her all this time?”
Natalie was about to answer when the man beside her spoke first. “She has no parents anymore.”
Natalie froze, surprised that Marcus would say that.
But thinking it through, it wasn’t wrong.
Her father had abandoned her, and her mother was about to be executed…
It was no different from being an orphan.
Seeing Gabriel remain silent, Natalie added softly, “I knew her mother, and we were close. That’s why I’ve been watching over her. You could say I’m just helping Mr. Collins take care of the child.”
Gabriel nodded thoughtfully. “So that’s how it is.”
“Yes.”
Natalie gave a small nod. She sensed Marcus looking at her, but with Jackson sitting across from them, she didn’t dare meet his eyes.
Across the way, Jackson’s expression was stormy, his entire presence growing darker.
“Since the misunderstanding’s cleared up, there’s no need to press further. She’s only a child- no need to make a big deal of it.
Gabriel spoke while leaning slightly toward Jackson.
Everyone could see the words were meant for him.
Jackson fell silent, though the way he looked at Natalie brimmed with resentment.
“It’s late. I really do have an important meeting tonight. I’ll be leaving.”

Marcus rose swiftly, his voice hoarse.
“You won’t even stay for dinner? You’re already here.”
Gabriel frowned with displeasure, glancing toward him.
Natalie stood as well. “I happen to have something to do tonight too. I won’t stay either. Mr. Collins, may I ride with you?”
Marcus glanced at her, lips curving faintly. “Of course.”
Jackson shot to his feet. “You’re leaving with me!”
He strode forward and grabbed Natalie’s arm, pulling her toward the door.
At the entrance, Natalie jerked free. “You and I aren’t going the same way.”
Jackson’s brows tightened. “And you and Uncle aren’t going the same way either! Why would you take his car?”
Natalie was about to answer when a deep voice cut in. “I’m heading to the company. Same direction as her.”
Jackson turned, his face sinking at the sight of Marcus behind them.
“I can take a detour to drive her. No need to trouble you.”
Before Natalie could respond, Jackson seized her wrist again and dragged her toward the car.
Marcus’s brows furrowed sharply at the sight.
“Jackson, is this how the Collins family teaches you to treat women?”
The words came from behind, filled with displeasure.
But by then, Natalie had already been shoved into the car.
Jackson rested his hand on the door and looked back coolly at Marcus. “Uncle, excuse me. But between husband and wife, we don’t bother with such courtesies. They’d feel too distant.”
Then he shut the door firmly.
In the driver’s seat, White had already started the engine.
Natalie caught one last glimpse of Marcus through the window–until Jackson’s cold figure
