Lily sat on a chair, sniffling, while Marcus knelt on one knee, gently wiping the child’s tears.
Beside him stood a stranger, a woman.
Her hair fell in loose curls to her waist; the long black dress she wore did nothing to hide her graceful figure. Full lips, wide eyes, a high–bridged nose…
With her delicate makeup, she looked like a porcelain doll.
She reminded Natalie of a music box princess–beautiful in a way that felt untouched, almost unreal.
Natalie’s gaze slipped downward, stopping at the diamond ring on the woman’s left hand.

And not just any woman, she was married.
Natalie pondered. Could this be the one he carried in his heart? The woman he could never have?
Marcus spotted Natalie and quickly rose from his chair.
Their eyes met; neither spoke a word.

“Lily’s foster mother, Ms. Foster,” Marcus said.
“And Cindy’s best friend, Adelyn.”
After a simple introduction, Natalie offered her hand first. “Nice to meet you.”
Adelyn hesitated, then extended her hand at last. “Ms. Foster, you look familiar. Have we met before?”
Natalie kept her tone light. “I’m Jackson’s wife, though we’re about to divorce.”

“Jackson is Marcus‘ nephew. Four years ago, when I returned to Brookvale for a gala, I must’ve seen you there.”
Natalie curved her lips into a faint smile. “I don’t have the best memory. I hope you don’t mind.”
“It’s fine.”
Adelyn’s expression was all warmth, but the strength in her handshake tightened suddenly, as though she meant to leave an impression.
When their visiting time came, Marcus and Adelyn prepared to go inside. But Marcus turned back to Natalie. “Wait with Lily at the door. I’ll drive you home later.”
“Marcus, weren’t we going to have lunch after this?”
Tension flickered across Adelyn’s face.
As Natalie met her gaze, she caught a sharp glint of possessiveness in the woman’s eyes.
So it wasn’t unrequited after all.
If the two of them hadn’t ended up together, maybe there had been some secret reason behind it.
“It’s fine, we’ll still make it,” Marcus said easily. He reached out, patted Natalie’s arm, and lowered his voice. “Wait for me.”
Lily wrapped her arms tightly around Natalie’s leg. Natalie glanced down at her.
Given everything, maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing to have Marcus by their side.
She nodded gently. “Alright.”
When her eyes drifted back to Adelyn, she saw clear displeasure etched across her face.
Marcus went in first; Adelyn followed.
Natalie, worried Lily would start to fuss if they lingered there, led her outside.
They stood by Marcus‘ Maybach, waiting.
To her surprise, Lily was unusually quiet.
Natalie crouched in front of her. “Lily, are you okay?”
