Lily said, “When I grow up, I want to build a beautiful house for mom, and one for Ms. Foster and Ms. Lucy too…”

Lucy froze when she heard that. Almost instinctively, she turned her face away.

Big tears spilled down her cheeks in an instant.

Natalie’s voice came out thick with emotion. “Do you miss your mom, Lily?”

At those words, Lily’s small hands suddenly stopped moving.

She lifted her head toward Natalie, then gave a little nod. “I really miss my mom.”

Natalie followed her lead and spoke softly. “Then tomorrow, Ms. Foster will take you to see your mom. How does that sound?”

“Really?” Lily shot to her feet, excitement and disbelief flashing in her eyes. “I can really go see Mommy?”

Natalie’s throat tightened at the child’s joy; her own eyes brimmed with tears. “Yes. We’ll go tomorrow.”

“That’s amazing! I haven’t seen Mommy in two years. The last time, the director took me to visit her.” Lily flung her little arms around Natalie’s neck. “Thank you, Ms. Foster.”

Then she pressed a light kiss to Natalie’s cheek.

Natalie’s heart melted at once; it felt as though she’d been dropped straight into a jar of honey.

Even the air seemed sweet.

But that sharp ache inside her chest still tore at her relentlessly.

The next morning, Natalie got up early and took Lily by taxi to the prison.

It was her first time returning since she’d been released; her state of mind couldn’t have been more different.

As Lily had wished, she finally saw her mother in the visiting room.

The little girl clutched the phone receiver with both hands, sobbing uncontrollably. “Mommy, I missed you so much! When can you come out? I want to live with you again!”

Of all the things Natalie had guarded against, she never expected Cindy.

She didn’t know exactly what Cindy said to the child, but from her lips, Natalie clearly caught the shape of that word. Death.

After Cindy fell silent, the little girl broke down, wailing in front of Natalie.

“I don’t want Mommy to die! I don’t want Mommy to die…”

“Mommy, you can’t die! You haven’t even come out yet–how can you

die?”

“You still have to watch Lily grow up. I don’t want you to die!”

Lily’s distress was so raw and heart–wrenching that Natalie couldn’t even manage to speak more than a few words to Cindy.

Only when the officer escorted Lily out did Natalie finally lift the phone.

Her face hardened. “I never planned to tell Lily about this. I only wanted to bring her here for a normal visit. I never imagined you’d be the one to tell her…‘

Her voice broke with grief.

“Natalie, she would’ve found out sooner or later. Better that she hears it from me than from someone else. At least this way, she can accept it faster… and learn to grow up.

“She’s just a child.” Natalie’s tears wouldn’t stop falling. “And as long as I’m here to protect her, she doesn’t need to grow up so fast.”

“I’m grateful you’re willing to care for Lily. Once I’m gone, she’ll be in your hands. This debt of mine, I can never repay it. In the next life, I’d serve you as a beast of burden if I must…”

“Stop it.”

Natalie was already sobbing too hard to continue.

Through the glass, she saw Cindy’s weary, drawn face, and her heart clenched with pain all over again.

Back in prison, if not for Cindy’s help, she probably wouldn’t have survived.
