"Heh, Vicky, my wife's watched your films before!" Mr. Vance said with a warm chuckle. "She always wondered how someone as lovely as you wasn't cast as the leading lady."
"Thank you, that's very kind of you," Vicky replied, a polite smile on her lips.
Alexander gave her hand an affectionate squeeze. "Mrs. Vance is right—you really are beautiful."
Why hadn't she ever landed the lead role? Well, everyone here knew the answer—Alexander kept her in check. He adored Vicky, but never wanted her to become too famous. He liked things just the way they were: she didn't have to exhaust herself with late-night shoots, didn't have to deal with endless romantic scenes. Her current level of fame was just right for him.
As for how Vicky herself felt about it, well, no one could say for sure.
Caleb and Julian watched Alexander laying it on thick with his public displays of affection, and both of them were silently grinding their teeth. If these two ever broke up, they'd throw a party.
Vicky blinked her bright eyes, catching the look on the faces of Alexander's two friends. She could practically hear their inner voices: "How is she putting up with him?"
Professor Vance glanced around. "Where's Stellan? Did he go pick up his girlfriend?"
Stellan was a handful of years older than them, but he'd also been Professor Vance's student back in high school—a sort of elder brother figure to Caleb and the others.
Julian smirked. "Professor, you know Stellan—he's so cold, apart from us, no one wants to hang out with him. If it weren't for us, he'd have no friends at all. A girlfriend? Not a chance."
That photo he posted the other day—everyone had just assumed it was another single guy's wishful thinking.
Only Caleb, rubbing his nose, had a suspicion—maybe, just maybe, Stellan really would show up with someone tonight.
Alexander chimed in, "Exactly. Professor, out of all your students, I'm obviously your greatest success."
Caleb and Julian shot him twin daggers: What, not having a girlfriend makes us failures now?
Vicky tugged Alexander's hand, giving him a subtle cue—he was really asking for it.
Alexander finally took the hint and fell silent.
Just then, Stellan pulled up outside and got out, crossing over to open the car door for Sunny with quiet courtesy. He offered his arm, and Sunny took it, slipping her hand into the crook of his elbow.
Alexander narrowed his eyes, studying Sunny's face. The more he looked, the more familiar she seemed.
Neither of them could have guessed that the woman Stellan introduced as his girlfriend was actually his nephew's ex-fiancée.
Caleb, the only one in on the secret, rolled his eyes inwardly. He really brought her. The guy's got guts—if Stellan's grandfather found out, things would seriously hit the fan.
Stellan, as unruffled as ever, looked at his younger friends. "What's the matter? Aren't you going to come say hello to my girlfriend?"
Everyone stared, momentarily stunned.
"I mean you three—come here and greet your new sister-in-law. After all, I'm technically your elder, right? It's only polite."
The trio exchanged a look, speechless.
Ugh.
