Early the next morning, Tristan made his way to Sunny's apartment.
She'd already blocked his number, so he followed a middle-aged man into the building and slipped into the elevator.
He pressed the doorbell, letting it ring out again and again, but no one answered.
Sunny's next-door neighbor, an older woman, eyed him with open suspicion.
"You again, young man?"
Last time, Tristan had rung the bell way too early and gotten a lecture from her. This time, he tried to be polite. "Ma'am, do you know if the young lady living here came home yesterday?"
The way he called her "ma'am" made the old lady beam.
"Oh, please, ‘ma'am'? I'm old enough to be your grandmother!" she teased, eyes twinkling. "You mean that pretty girl who used to live here? Are you a friend of hers? She moved out yesterday!"
"She's not just pretty—her boyfriend's handsome too! Had a whole crew helping her move, looked very impressive. You're her friend and you didn't know?"
Tristan's face darkened. "Ma'am, are you sure? You're saying her boyfriend came to pick her up?"
His tone shifted, and the old lady's smile faded into a scowl. "What, you don't believe me? Her boyfriend is a looker, no wonder she dumped you! Men who are too petty never get the girl, you know!"
With that, she grabbed her little shopping trolley and headed for the elevator, off to do her morning grocery run.
Tristan stood in the hallway, his face flushing and paling by turns.
He'd always thought Sunny would love him, unwavering, for a lifetime. But before he'd even turned to look back, she'd already vanished without a trace.
Tristan couldn't accept the idea that Sunny might be seeing someone else.
He dialed a number, voice ice-cold. "Find out who Sunny's new boyfriend is."
An hour later, after he'd reached the office, his assistant approached his desk, looking nervous.
"Did you find anything?" Tristan shot him a sharp look.
Meanwhile, Jude Pierce immediately sensed something was wrong and got in touch with Wyatt.
He was stunned to learn Sunny had already been suspended for a week.
Jude quickly pieced together the details and reached out to Alfven.
"Director Harrison, is there some issue with our acquisition deal?"
"Manager Pierce, Attorney Glenn is handling the case—everything's on track. But yes, President Lawson did contact us earlier."
"Director Harrison, our investment projects are always managed directly by the CEO. President Lawson has no authority over our department."
Both men were sharp enough to pick up on the subtext. Alfven caught the warning.
"Manager Pierce, of course President Lawson's wishes come first. If there's any area where we've fallen short, please let me know."
"You're too polite, Director Harrison. It's just that, for this acquisition, Summit Law isn't our only option. The only reason we're working with you is because we value Attorney Glenn and his team so highly. I trust you understand what I mean."
