Stand Me Up? I'll Marry His Billionaire Uncle novel Chapter 55

After hanging up the phone, Jude Pierce mulled over the CEO's attitude.

Such a minor contract, yet the boss insisted on coming to sign it himself—if that didn't show how much he valued Summit Legal, nothing would.

Even if it were the most prestigious firm in the country—say, the Ivy League Law Firm—no CEO would go so far, would they? Unless, of course, someone in that firm meant something special to him.

A flash of realization struck Jude. Had he just uncovered the company's biggest secret?

Their CEO—Stellan Lawson—thirty-three, single, not a single tabloid scandal to his name, whether at home or abroad. Rumors swirled about his orientation, some even whispered he might be gay.

But Mr. Lawson remained unfazed, always doing things his own way. Even the executive assistants' pool was mainly men.

Jude had once wondered himself about the boss's preferences, given how squeaky-clean he kept his image.

Then, just a few days ago, Stellan personally volunteered to give a ride to a strange woman. And then, because of her attorney, Jude got chewed out in the middle of the night.

Anyone with half a brain could tell the boss treated her differently.

Tapping his finger rhythmically on the desk, Jude called Attorney Glenn.

Over at Summit Legal, Wyatt had just hung up and was still a bit puzzled.

Jude Pierce had specifically asked him to bring Sunny along to sign the contract today. Not that Wyatt wouldn't have brought her anyway, but still—Jude made a point of it.

Wyatt frowned, thinking it over. He'd heard Jude Pierce was a married man.

The car ride was quiet. Each was lost in their own thoughts.

Sunny worried about what she'd do if she actually ran into Stellan.

Wyatt was mentally rehearsing how to gently tell his brightest associate to get her head back in the game.

"Boss—"

"Sunny—"

They spoke at the same time.

Sunny paused. "Uh, you first, boss."

Wyatt's mouth twitched. "So, Sunny, you said you broke up with your boyfriend recently, right?"

"That's right."

He cleared his throat. "Mind if I ask why?"

Sunny's eyes dimmed. "Why? Well, let's just say I got cheated on."

Wyatt winced inwardly. He'd heard her breakup was a mess, and now realized his question might have hit a nerve.

He coughed, trying to sound casual. "Well, Sunny, how about I introduce you to some new guys?"

Sunny's eyes widened. "Some…guys?"

"Oh, no, I mean—I know a few great colleagues in the field. You could meet them, see if anyone catches your eye. Didn't mean to suggest you'd be dating more than one at a time."

"Take Manager Pierce, for example—the one we're meeting today. His wife used to work with him. They got married, and now she's a stay-at-home mom."

Wyatt was pretty proud of himself—he'd managed to slip in the fact that Jude was married and offered to help Sunny meet some quality men.

He mentally gave himself top marks for his smooth delivery.

Sunny, though, had no idea what had gotten into her boss—since when did he gossip or play matchmaker?

She chuckled politely. "Thanks, boss, but I'm not looking to date anyone right now."

Wyatt felt a pang. Was she really still hung up on that jerk?

Lost in their own thoughts, they arrived at Lawson Corporation's headquarters.

Wyatt looked surprised as well.

"Heh, seems Mr. Lawson is really invested in this merger," he commented.

Just then, Sunny's phone buzzed in her pocket, and the abrupt WhatsApp ringtone echoed in the conference room.

Wyatt shot her a side glance—it was that same "S.T." calling again.

He frowned. "Didn't you set your phone to silent?"

Sunny gave an awkward smile and nodded apologetically. "Sorry, I'll take this outside."

No way was she brave enough to ignore this man's call twice.

Once she was safely outside, she answered. "Hi, Uncle Stellan."

His voice was low and unhurried. "Not calling me Mr. Lawson anymore?"

Sunny hesitated. She honestly didn't know what to call him.

"Where are you?" he asked.

"I'm in your company's conference room. Just stepped out to take your call."

"Alright. Look up."

Sunny raised her head and saw him—phone still to his ear, lips curved in a faint smile, striding toward her with easy confidence.

Backlit by the sun, the hard lines of his face softened.

For a moment, Sunny was completely distracted.

He lowered his phone, lips quirking almost imperceptibly. "Let's go. Wouldn't want to keep everyone waiting."
