Camila Davis watched as Dennis Williams calmly soothed the situation in just a few words, and she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
Now she finally understood why Dennis needed to be part of Lillian’s second-phase therapy plan. Guiding Lillian through moments like this—maybe he really was better at it than she was as her own mom.
It seemed Dennis could sense her thoughts. He looked up, catching her gaze. Their eyes met, and in his deep, steady expression, she saw a flicker of reassurance and quiet certainty.
It was as if he was telling her: Don’t worry, I’ve got this.
Camila felt her heart squeeze a little, touched in a place she rarely let herself feel.
Later that evening, the recital began.
And so did Dennis’s little challenge for Lillian.
For someone so young, Lillian’s memory was downright impressive. She’d only been shown once, but she remembered everything—every note, every cue—perfectly from start to finish.
Even Dennis looked a little surprised at her photographic memory.
When the concert finally ended, Dennis didn’t hold back his praise. “Lillian, you were amazing! You got every one right. I promised you a reward, so Uncle Dennis has to keep his word. Tell me—what instrument do you like best?”
Lillian counted on her tiny fingers, her voice sweet and earnest: “I like so many… piano, violin, cello. But if I can only have one, I want a violin.”
“Oh?” Dennis raised an eyebrow. “Why the violin?”
Lillian tilted her head, thinking hard, but she ended up just blurting out, “Because it sounds pretty. I like it.”
Dennis didn’t press her for some grand explanation—he just smiled. “Is that so? Alright. I’ll get you a violin, and I’ll even introduce you to a good teacher.”
