Since he’d said so, Camila Davis didn’t insist any further.
Soon, the group made their way to a riverside restaurant.
This place was perched on the fifty-something floor of a landmark building in downtown Harrisburg, with floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides. The view was incredible—you could look out over the whole city with the river twinkling in the night.
The food was just as impressive, all crafted by a Michelin-starred chef. Every dish looked and smelled amazing.
Halfway through dinner, fireworks started going off outside, just like the rumors said they would.
Lillian immediately forgot all about her dinner, pressing her face and hands against the glass, eyes wide and sparkling. “Mommy, look! It’s so pretty!”
Camila Davis turned to watch too.
It really was beautiful.
But for some reason, her mind drifted back to New Year’s Eve, when she’d watched the celebrations on video chat. The fireworks back then had seemed so much brighter, so much more dazzling…
Almost unconsciously, she glanced across the table at Dennis Williams.
He happened to be looking at her too.
Their eyes met again.
His were dark, calm, and gentle—hard to read, but somehow deeper and more intense than before.
Camila’s heart suddenly skipped a beat. She quickly looked away, feeling oddly flustered, and didn’t dare meet his eyes again.
Dennis just raised an eyebrow, but didn’t say anything.
Later, after the fireworks died down and dinner was winding to a close, a waiter approached their table with a tray and a professional smile. “Good evening, sorry to interrupt. Today’s Mardi Gras, so our restaurant has prepared a special dessert for each table—King Cake. We hope you enjoy, and have a wonderful holiday.”
The waiter set down a tray with festive slices of cake, then continued, “And since it’s also Valentine’s Day, these nine roses are complimentary for the gentleman… for you to give to your special someone, sir.”
