Camila Davis was a little surprised to see Mr. Harris, but she walked over with a warm smile. "Mr. Harris, you’re out of the hospital?"

Mr. Harris’s face lit up with his usual gentle smile. He nodded. "Yes, checked out this morning. I wanted to say goodbye to you and Walter, but you were both busy. When I heard you’d be here tonight, I thought I’d just come by to catch up."

Camila nodded, her tone full of professional concern. "How’s your leg doing? Still hurting?"

She’d been so busy at the army base lately she hadn’t managed to visit. Old habits died hard, and she couldn’t help but check on his recovery.

Mr. Harris answered honestly, "No pain at all. The meds you prescribed are working wonders. I feel stronger every day. If this keeps up, I’ll be running up five flights of stairs without breaking a sweat!"

Camila couldn’t help but laugh.

As the two chatted easily, the guests nearby stared in disbelief.

The rumor mill had always painted Mr. Harris as a stickler for rules—tough, old-school, and more than a little intimidating. Those few who’d met him agreed: he rarely smiled and carried himself with an air of authority that made even a simple greeting nerve-wracking.

Yet here he was, chatting and joking with Camila Davis—the very woman people whispered about, the so-called "Mrs. Smith" everyone looked down on—his manner full of respect and even admiration.

Everyone was stunned, including Jordan Smith and his group across the room. Sandra Taylor, in particular, looked like she could hardly believe her eyes.
