Hailey folded her arms, tilting her chin with smug satisfaction as she looked at Kayla. “Kayla, didn’t you say yesterday you were going to call the police? That they’d investigate and clear your name? So where are they? Or were you bluffing the whole time?”
“Oh, and where did you disappear yesterday afternoon? You were gone for hours. Don’t tell me you snuck off to a hospital to get rid of that bastard child, hoping to cover your tracks so no one could prove you slept around?” Hailey scoffed.
Marianna let out a startled gasp, covering her mouth. “No way. Even if the father is unknown, it’s still your child. How could you just end its life like that? That’s so cruel, Kayla. Heartless. It was still a living being.”
Davon’s gaze fell to Kayla’s stomach, his face filled with disgust. To him, her affair with another man felt like the worst kind of betrayal.
Even if it had been his indifference that pushed Kayla into someone else’s arms, it still infuriated him. It felt as if something that belonged to him had been tainted by another.
Davon thought bitterly, ‘She’s filthy. If she was going to throw herself at someone like that, she might as well have slept with me instead…‘
Hailey lifted her chin high, her voice dripping with disdain. “A woman as shameless as her is capable of anything. She’s a disgrace to our school.”
Her friends eagerly echoed her, piling on one insult after another. Within a few words, Kayla had been branded as a liar, a cold and heartless woman, shameless and reckless in her private life.
Kayla watched their mouths move nonstop, her expression unchanged, the faint curve of a smile still resting on her lips.
Hailey hurled insults until her throat went dry. When she realized Kayla hadn’t reacted at all–not a trace of anger or shame–her frown deepened.
“Kayla, why aren’t you saying anything? Did we hit the mark, and now you can’t argue back, so you’re just admitting it?” Hailey demanded.
The others only then noticed that Kayla hadn’t spoken a single word since the start, and they found it strange as well.
Yet even with Hailey pressing her, Kayla still showed no response,
Just as confusion spread through the group, Kayla suddenly raised a hand.
Everyone’s mind flashed back to the moment earlier when she had lashed out at Hailey. Startled, they jumped back a few steps, afraid she might strike again.
But the move they expected never came. Instead, Kayla only slipped an earbud from her ear, arched a brow, and looked at them with confusion.
She said, “Sorry, I was listening to music. Were you all just barking? No wonder it sounded so loud.”

One of them thought, ‘So we’ve been yelling at her all this time, and she had earbuds in, not hearing a single word? Wait, barking? Who’s supposed to be barking here?‘
