Kayla stood at the front of Class G’s team, her gaze steady as she looked the competition over. She wasn’t discouraged at all. Actually, this was exactly the topic she’d wanted.
Kayla turned to Payton. Tania, and Killian. “Arguing that human nature is basically evil makes people think harder. It’s more challenging, and it tests how deep we can go. We’ve got this–trust me!” She reached her hand out, rallying the team.
Killian was still hesitating when Payton smiled faintly and placed his hand on Kayla’s. “Let’s do this.”
Tania’s hesitation melted away, and she grinned as she reached out too. “We’ve got this.” It sounded like she was cheering everyone on, but she was also pumping herself up.
Killian saw this and his last bit of doubt vanished. He let out a wry laugh. “Guess I’ll give it another shot then.” He’d lost so many times already. It couldn’t get worse, and it didn’t really matter now.
They all looked at each other, shouted, “Let’s go!” together, and broke out laughing.
Right after, they jumped into strategy mode. Payton would lead as captain, and Kayla would deliver the closing argument.
Before they knew it, prep time was up.
The teacher stood at the front, his voice calm but commanding. “Are you ready?”
“Ready!” both teams shouted. Their voices echoed through the classroom, full of youthful energy and the hunger to win.
With the teacher’s signal, the debate kicked off.
Davon, as the first speaker for the affirmative, stood up to deliver the opening statement. “Honorable judges, esteemed opponents, and everyone here today.
“Our team firmly believes that human nature is fundamentally good. This view has roots in philosophical and religious traditions spanning centuries and cultures…”
Davon’s opening statement was solid, well–reasoned, backed with evidence, and he even threw in some classic references. Kayla had to admit, being one of the top debaters on the school team wasn’t just for show. He knew how to make his case.
After Davon wrapped up, the Class A students were grinning like they’d already won. Victory seemed locked in.
“We’ve got this in the bag, they thought.
Meanwhile, Class G looked totally deflated, like they’d already accepted defeat before the real fight even
started.
The teacher noticed some of the Class C debaters losing steam and jumped in to pump them up. “Look, Class A’s strong, I’ll give you that. But don’t throw in the towel yet.

“Even if you don’t win, at least show them what you’re made of. Walk off that stage with some dignity.”
Payton and Kayla exchanged a quick glance. Neither of them looked discouraged. If anything, something lit up in their eyes. They immediately started picking apart the holes in Davon’s argument, scribbling down.
notes fast.
When it was Payton’s turn for the rebuttal, everything about him changed. Gone was the lazy, slouchy attitude. he usually had. He straightened up, his expression serious and focused.
“Honorable judges, opposing team, and everyone here, our position is that human nature is fundamentally evil. Now, that doesn’t mean we’re denying anything good about humanity. What it means is that we’re looking at human nature honestly, without sugar–coating it,” Payton began, his voice clear and steady.
He continued, “Selfishness, greed, aggression–these aren’t flaws we picked up along the way. They’re instincts hardwired into us through evolution. And under the right conditions, they come out fast. That’s the dark side of human nature we can’t just ignore…”
Payton laid it all out–evolution, real–world observations, psychology experiments, how laws and morals try to keep the worst impulses in check. He covered every angle, and the room went dead quiet as everyone hung on his words.
Kayla stared at Payton, genuinely shocked. She’d never seen him study seriously or put in real effort before. But now she realized he was way sharper than she’d given him credit for, and he really knew his stuff.
‘No wonder he used to be number one in the whole school. Even with his grades dropping, he’s still got it,’ Kayla thought.
Suddenly, Kayla actually cared who would win this debate. She wasn’t the only one stunned. Payton’s speech flipped everything. Class A’s smug looks vanished instantly, while Class G, who’d looked defeated seconds ago, suddenly looked pumped and hopeful.
When Payton finished, Class G exploded. The applause was deafening, and everyone was on their feet, cheering and shouting like they’d just won a championship.
But the debate wasn’t over yet.
With the teacher moderating, both sides launched into free debate and cross–examination, going back and forth with sharp arguments and airtight logic.
Every clash of ideas sent sparks flying, lighting up the whole debate with energy.
Even Killian, who usually got destroyed by Class A in debates, was on fire today. He caught every weak spot in
arguments and hammered away at them until Class A had nothing left to say.

As the debate heated up, both teams zeroed in on the core question–was human nature basically good, or was it evil at its core? The battle got intense,
Kayla was brutal. Every point she made hit its mark, backing Marianna into a corner with sharp questions that came one after another. Marianna started falling apart under the pressure, her arguments crumbling as her
nerves took over.
Everyone in the room was glued to the debate. They seemed to forget this was just Class A versus Class G. No
