Marianna was so rattled she could barely speak. Even her closing argument came out rushed and shaky. She just wanted it over with.

Kayla, on the other hand, pulled straight from what happened between her and Marianna today, building a solid, logical closing argument that nailed every point.

When Kayla’s final words landed, the whole classroom lit up. Everyone was buzzing with excitement.

“We won! We actually did it. Class A couldn’t even talk back. Kay, we won,” Tania shouted first, her excitement spilling over. The teacher hadn’t announced the results yet, but it was obvious–Class G had totally crushed Class A.

Tania never thought they could actually beat Class A. ‘This is freaking awesome!‘ she thought.

Killian’s hands clenched into fists at his sides. He could hardly believe he was the one up there, going head–to- head with Class A and actually winning.

It’d been so long since Killian felt this fired up about debate. Right when he was ready to give up, he’d somehow found that spark again.

Killian’s eyes grew misty, and his nose tingled with emotion. ‘So Class A isn’t invincible after all,‘ he thought. ‘As long as I really go for it, I can do this.’

Kayla grinned and shot Payton a quick look from across the room. Her eyes fixed on the teacher, waiting for the official announcement.

The teacher hadn’t expected much from today. Class G always got destroyed by Class A. It was honestly pretty boring.

But today he’d watched an actual epic debate. He found himself smiling without realizing it. For once, his boring job had given him something exciting.

It took him a minute to pull himself together. When he did, he gave his first genuine smile of the day. “I’m sure everyone felt it today. Class G’s debaters were absolutely outstanding. They showed real expertise and incredible knowledge.

“Their arguments were clear and organized, and they controlled the whole debate from start to finish. Especially… well, that’s why today’s winners are the opposition–Class G! Keep it up. I really believe you’ll have even bigger victories ahead.”

As soon as the teacher finished, the bell rang. The classroom went wild.

“We won! Class G beat Class A!” voices shouted, overlapping in pure excitement.

Killian grinned, his eyes bright. They’d finally broken the unbeatable curse,

Tania’s eyes glistened as she smiled and nodded. “Yeah, we actually did it.”

Payton glanced at Kayla with a small smile. “Congrats.”

While Class G celebrated, Davon–who’d just lost to Class G for the first time–sat there looking like a thundercloud.

Tania grinned even wider when she saw his face. “Hey, Davon, why the sour look? Weren’t you just calling us trash? Well, you lost. So what does that make you? Worse than trash?” She laughed. “How’s it feel to eat your words?”

Class G had taken so much crap from Class A. Now that they’d finally won, there was no way they were letting this go.

“We thought it’d be a real fight, but you guys folded in like five minutes. Guess now you know there’s always someone better than you!”

Marianna pressed her lips together and glanced at Kayla. “Kayla, you guys won. Isn’t that enough? Do you really have to rub it in?” she said, her tone bitter.

Kayla just gave her a faint smile. “Didn’t you guys do the exact same thing to us before? What’s wrong? Can’t handle it now that you’re on the receiving end?”

Davon’s face twisted with anger and humiliation. “So what if you got lucky in one debate?

“Class C has the worst grades in the whole school. Everyone knows you’re just cannon fodder for the rest of us when it comes to the SATS. You’re an embarrassment–not even good enough to carry our bags. What’s there to brag about?”
