Chapter 167
Marianna couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about what Davon had just said. She felt a flash of irritation too. ‘Why is he still treating Kayla so well, even after everything?‘ she thought resentfully.
With that thought running through her mind, Marianna let a flicker of disappointment cross her face, careful
to let Davon see it.
“Guess Kayla’s whole push–and–pull game really worked. You’re completely wrapped up in her now, Davon. Not like me. I just stay by your side quietly, happy as long as you’re okay,” Marianna murmured softly.
Davon’s frown smoothed out, and a warm smile spread across his face. “I know you’re the best, Marianna. You really are.”
But Marianna suddenly turned pouty, throwing a little tantrum. “What’s the point? I just hang around like an idiot while Kayla knows exactly how to stir things up and play games. She’s so good at playing hard to get. That’s probably why you like her, isn’t it?”
Davon actually laughed at that, dismissive and cold. “Like her? Come on, Marianna, don’t get the wrong idea. Why would I ever fall for some spoiled, drama–queen princess like Kayla?
“The only girl who truly belongs with me is someone like you, kind, sweet, and amazing. You already know how I feel about you.”
Marianna’s eyes went wide, lighting up with shocked excitement. “Really? But you’re always doing so much for her, even spending all that time making those math notes.”
Davon glanced at the notebook in his hand, then smirked and tossed it straight into the trash without hesitation. “Those? I just had someone copy them off the internet. Why would I waste my time actually doing anything for Kayla?”
Davon reached out and gently ruffled Marianna’s hair, his voice taking on a meaningful edge. “Silly girl. The only reason I’m being nice to Kayla is because she’s still useful to me right now.”

After saying goodbye to Payton and Tania, Kayla headed to the boxing gym alone.
Night had fallen thick around her, and the dim yellow streetlights barely lit up the narrow alley ahead, draping everything in a hazy, dreamlike blur. Ever since her rebirth, this path to the gym had become part of her daily routine.
After everything she’d been through, Kayla understood one thing clearly. The only way to truly take control of her life was to get stronger. Only then could she protect herself and the people she cared about.
The alley was hemmed in by tall walls covered in moss and climbing vines. Every now and then, a night bird called out, its cry cutting through the silence and making the emptiness feel even heavier. An uneasy chill crept up Kayla’s spine.
Her steps faltered slightly. Kayla couldn’t help remembering that time back in middle school when she’d been trapped in an alley just like this one, crying helplessly while fear swallowed her whole. That memory still

haunted her like a shadow she couldn’t shake.
