“Maxwell, what the heck were you doing? I told you to take good care of Gianna. Instead, she fell and embarrassed herself!”
“Exactly! Didn’t you study styling abroad? Weren’t you supposed to be some kind of pro? How could it turn out like this?”
In the Nygards‘ living room, Marcelo and Miguel were firing questions one after another.
Even Emery spoke up, “Maxwell, you seriously need to work on your skills. You can’t handle the unexpected at all.”
Getting scolded from every side, Maxwell felt so wronged that he almost wanted to drop dead right there.
“I didn’t mean for it to go this way! At that time … ugh, forget it. You wouldn’t understand!”
Gianna never listened to him. She kept adding things she shouldn’t.
Her walk was stiff, her look didn’t match the vibe, and she had no clue how to face the camera.
How was he supposed to fix that? It was impossible.
Back in training, she had the basics down.
But later, she got hooked on acting, skipped practice, and messed up on stage.
What could he do for that?
And yet, all the blame landed on him. Was Gianna totally innocent?
The more Maxwell thought about it, the angrier he got. He waved his fists in the air, like he could punch out all that frustration.
“I worked with her every single day for this contest, morning until night. I never slacked.
“I kept changing her look and double–checking details, trying to prevent problems.”
But Gianna refused to cooperate and ruined it on stage. Now, everyone was dumping on him. It was totally unfair.
Still, he couldn’t say any of that out loud. He knew they’d just scold him more harshly.

A sudden thought hit him. Was that how Amelia used to feel? Wronged and helpless?

Just then, Gianna walked in and caught the end of it.
“Marcelo, Miguel, Mom, don’t blame Maxwell. It’s my fault. I didn’t work with him well enough. That’s why we failed.”
Her eyes reddened, as if she were about to cry. She looked so pitiful that it made people want to comfort her.
“Gianna, don’t cover for Maxwell. He didn’t protect you and wasted both money and promotion. That’s on him!”
Marcelo’s face darkened, clearly furious.
Gianna shrank back, unwilling to shoulder all the blame. Still, she put on a sweet act and tried to stand up for Maxwell.
“Don’t be so tough on him. He didn’t mean for this to happen. Just let him practice more. I’m not mad at him.”
She even gave Maxwell a sweet smile.
He felt suffocated, his face turning hot.
He wondered if she truly meant it. Was she caring about him, or just putting on an act?
Out of nowhere, he realized he couldn’t read her anymore.
Gianna used to always cling to him, acting sweet and soft.
But the way she “defended” him earlier felt more like she’d tossed him into the fire.
Maxwell was stuck, frustrated, and annoyed by her behavior. Still, he couldn’t explode because of his family.
Seeing Maxwell remain silent, Marcelo took it as a sign of guilt and came down on him even harder. “You’re grown now, yet you’re still unreliable.
“The company put in lots of money, and not only did you fail, but you lost it. The shareholders will have plenty to say.”
As the heir, every move Maxwell made, every investment, was under watch.
His future position wasn’t in the family’s hands. It all came down to shareholder votes.
Maxwell couldn’t take the blame anymore. He snapped back, “Marcelo, Miguel, I made
