Gianna’s eyes burned as she caught Vincent’s gaze fixed on Amelia. Fury coiled inside her chest, swelling until she thought she might explode.

That bitch. Even here, at a birthday party, she has the gall to tempt him.

Her lips pressed tight. Hatred flickered through her glare as she locked on Amelia.

You want a man so badly? Fine. I’ll make sure you get one.

She slipped into the shadows of a corner. Her hand slid into her purse. Fingers flew over her phone, and a sharp message raced away.

The party roared on. Laughter rolled across the hall. Glasses chimed. Plates clattered. Guests ate and drank with joy.

Gianna’s eyes stayed on her phone. When the screen lit, she read the reply and let a cold smile twist her lips.

Amelia, however, sat restless. Even though it was her own relative’s birthday, she wished she could slip out early.

Thea and Demi stayed surrounded by family, talking without pause.

Amelia rose with quiet grace. She thought to step outside for air.

She would stay until the banquet ended, out of courtesy, then she would leave.

She moved toward the garden. Suddenly, a servant rushed forward with a tray of wine. The glasses tipped. The liquid sloshed. They were seconds away from spilling all over her.

Watch out!Amelia darted aside with swift precision. She avoided the crash but not the splash. Red wine stained the hem of her pale dress.

The servant’s face blanched. She bowed her head low and stammered. I’m so sorry, Ms. Amelia! I didn’t mean it!

Amelia glanced down. The stain spread fast over the mooncolored fabric. It looked like blood splashed across silk.

The servant panicked. I swear I didn’t do it on purpose. Let me take you to change into something clean.

Amelia had no room here anymore. Her ties with the Nygards had been cut.

She wanted to wave it off. But the stain was too glaring. If she returned to the hall, gossip would follow.

So she gave a quiet nod. Alright. Lead the way.

The servant brought her to a small guest room in the back garden. Please wait here, Ms. Amelia. I’ll fetch you clean clothes.

Thank you,Amelia replied.

The servant left and shut the door.

For an instant, unbeknownst to Amelia, a gleam of triumph flashed in her eyes.

In the deep of the garden, a shadow waited.

Alone in the room, Amelia breathed in and froze. A strange scent drifted through the air.

Sweet. Cloying. Vulgar. It prickled against her skin, stirring heat beneath it.

She stiffened. She knew the smell. Her medical knowledge warned her immediately.

It was an aphrodisiac. Breathe enough of it and the mind would blur, the body would burn, and lust would take control.

The only way to cure that lust was the satiation of carnal desire.

Her thoughts spun back to the servant. The pieces fit too well.

Gianna. Of course. Who else but her?

This has her fingerprints all over it.

Amelia’s mouth curled in a sharp laugh. She dug into her bag and drew out a vial. One calming pill slid into her hand, and she popped it beneath her tongue.

It was her own creation. A cure against poison.

Cool relief washed over her, and the fire dulled.

Her eyes swept the room. In the corner sat a burner. Blue smoke curled upward.

Cheap trick.” Her voice was scornful. She plucked a white pin from her hair. With a swift flick. she knocked the lid aside,

Inside burned chunks of scarlet incense.

Then footsteps thundered outside. Heavy. Uneven. Quick.

Her eyes hardened. She pressed herself flat behind the door.

The door flew open with a violent crash.

A drunk stumbled inside. His cheeks burned red. His eyes swam with hunger. Casey Lander. The infamous playboy of Brookhaven.

Where are you, darling? His voice slurred. He staggered forward with open arms. Don’t hide. Let me take care of you.”

Amelia’s gaze turned lethal.
