Hearing Eliza’s words, Wendy struggled to open her eyes. The doctors in the operating room immediately had the nurses hold her down and began administering pain relief.
The surgery was already complete. What mattered now was Wendy’s will to live.
Seeing her stir, Eliza finally let out a breath of relief. She stepped out of the operating room, waiting for Wendy to wake on her own.
Outside, Nolan saw Eliza’s face covered in sweat, her tension written all over her.
“What did you say to my aunt?” Henry asked. He knew exactly what kind of person Wendy was. If she had given up on life, there was no way she would suddenly find the will to fight back.
“I just told her what you told me,” Eliza replied. “And I added some harsh words. Wendy is a fiercely proud woman. She would never allow herself to be deceived. Maybe deep down she already knew the truth, but she never admitted it. All it takes is a little outside provocation to spark her instinct to resist. I was waiting for her to rise up and refute me, to tell me it was all a lie.”
Henry listened quietly, then nodded. “You’re not wrong. At this point, any method is worth a try.”
Eliza gave a slight nod.
The three of them waited in the hospital corridor for a long time. Nolan went to buy Eliza some food.
Now that they had returned safely to Westbrook, Eliza’s taut nerves finally began to loosen. She leaned against Nolan’s shoulder and drifted into a deep sleep.
Henry watched her sleeping in silence for a while before turning to Nolan. “Will you take good care of her?”
“You’re asking me that now?”
“I just want a clear answer. Will you, or won’t you?”
Henry knew full well that once this ordeal ended, Eliza and Nolan would likely become engaged. The arrangements were already in motion before–if not for the incident at the medical school, their engagement banquet would have already taken place.
They had once been brothers. Henry wanted Nolan to do right by her.
“I will,” Nolan said firmly. “This isn’t something you need to worry about. I’ll treat Eliza well. I

won’t let anyone hurt her.”
“Good.”

Henry smiled faintly. He had known the answer, but he still needed to hear it out loud.

“But even if Wendy pulls through,” Henry added, “the person behind all this is still out there. We’ll have to hope she names them when she wakes up. Otherwise… things will get difficult.”
Both men fell into heavy silence.
Time passed before the doctor finally emerged from the operating room. “The patient is out of danger,” he told them. “She’s conscious and able to speak.”
At once, Eliza’s eyes flew open.
“The patient asked to see Ms. Rivers,” the doctor added.
Eliza understood immediately–Wendy had heard every word she had spoken.
“I’ll go,” she said, standing.
“I’ll come with you,” Nolan offered.
“So will I,” Henry added.
Eliza shook her head. “No. Wendy asked for me. If you both go in, she might refuse to talk. Then everything we’ve done would be wasted.”
They had no choice but to agree.
Eliza followed the doctor back inside. Wendy’s eyes were open now.
Walking up to her, Eliza said softly, “I thought you weren’t going to wake up.”
“What you said… Morten told me long ago.”
