Eliza hadn’t spent much time with Wendy, but even in those few encounters she had seen clearly–Wendy was a strong woman.
And yet for such a strong woman, love had been her only reason to live.
Wendy didn’t know how to explain her life to Eliza. It felt as if she had stumbled through it blindly, without meaning. If not for meeting Morten, her existence would have been nothing more than marrying Leo, becoming bitter and sharp–tongued with age. Morten had been her only purpose.
“You woke me, but there are things you shouldn’t know,” Wendy said coldly. “This isn’t for children to meddle in. Even adults see and choose silence. Every circle has its rules. You can’t break them. Light cannot exist without darkness. Both are necessary.”
“But have you thought,” Eliza pressed, “that the one behind you was lying all along? He only used you. When you were no longer useful, he discarded you. He never intended to revive Morten. And you’ve seen for yourself–clones are just clones. They look like him, but they’re not him. Doesn’t that prove he deceived you?”
“I had to protect my family.”
Wendy’s gaze sharpened. “I hated my brother for casting me abroad, for making me a pawn and forcing me to marry Leo. But I knew he loved me. That’s why I always wanted control of the Foster family–revenge, yes, but never at the cost of harming them.”
Eliza wanted to argue, but Wendy cut her off. “Didn’t you see? Ethan would die for Emilia. But for his family’s sake, he never dared speak a word. I’m the same.”
Eliza’s lips parted but no sound came. She understood all too well.
Wendy had chosen silence to shield the Fosters from being dragged down.
But that also meant the investigation hit a wall.
“The medical university case ends with me,” Wendy declared. “Treat me as the criminal. When I’m taken to the police, I’ll claim every crime as mine alone. The Foster family will be clean.”
She had decided long ago.
If she had died, there would be no interrogation. Now that she lived, she would bear the blame, carrying all the sins herself.
“You don’t need to ask again,” she said flatly. “I’ll never speak of the ones above me,”

“I understand.”

Henry and Nolan rose as she emerged, but she only shook her head. “Wendy won’t say a word.”
“I’ll try,” Henry muttered.
“No.” Eliza caught his arm. “Even if you went, she wouldn’t tell you. Wendy is too proud. She won’t confide in her brother, much less you.”
“Wendy said she’ll take every crime on herself to keep the Fosters safe. If it had been for any other reason, I’d keep pressing. But for this–I can’t. Protecting the ones she loves… maybe it’s the only good left in her.”
Henry looked down, silent.
