Estella went on. “If we had kids, raising them would fall entirely on me. You’d sit back and wash your hands of all responsibility, leaving me to shoulder everything alone. Meanwhile, you’d be out there entertaining countless women, and any one of them could show up at our door to trample on my dignity. I already know exactly what kind of life that would be. And now you’re asking me to go back? I might as well eat shit!”

She knew–crystal clear–that marriage offered no real protection for women.

If a woman married a good man, maybe she could live a decent life.

But if the man was irresponsible, the woman was doomed to fall into poverty and despair.

She’d rather live like a man–build a career, make money–than rely on one.

She walked away from marriage and worked hard just to have a life that any average man is born into: a life with dignity, one where no one tries to measure her worth based on marriage or childbearing.

So why couldn’t Nathaniel let her go?

Was it love?

Maybe at least a little.

But what he really couldn’t give up was his own convenience.

There wasn’t a cheaper, more obedient maid than her.

Nathaniel stood there, his eyes a storm of anger and hurt.

“I’ve changed. I would never treat you like that again.”

“You can’t change.”

Estella scoffed. “You’ll never change. Just look at how you tried to win me back–through pressure, threats, and intimidation. Never once with respect or love. Nathaniel, you don’t know how to love. You’ll never be husband material.”

Her words were a death sentence.

Nathaniel felt like his chest had been struck by lightning and carved open by a blade.

“No… no, that’s not true.”

He really did love Estella.

With that, she slammed the door.

This time, Nathaniel didn’t get the chance to stop her.

He stared at the shut door, the corners of his eyes turning red.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

How could Estella change?

How could she stop loving him?

Estella sat quietly with her back against the door for a long time.

She looked back on their marriage and realized the sweet moments were few–almost

nonexistent.

What she remembered most were the grievances, the unfairness, the numbness.

Leaving Nathaniel really had been the right decision.

She didn’t know how long she sat there.

Eventually, she stood up and peeked out through the peephole.

A breath of relief escaped her lips.

“Estella, do not come in today. There are tons of reporters outside looking for you. Whoever’s behind this is seriously out for blood. First they hired people to stage that scene, then bought hot search spots, and now they’ve even bribed the media. The cops haven’t made any progress yet. Think hard–who do you have such a deep grudge with?”

A few faces popped into Estella’s mind–Isabelle, Wendy, and Nathaniel.

Nathaniel had come by last night and insisted he had nothing to do with it.
