In the end, Estella gritted her teeth. “Withdraw.”
The admissions officer left, his face full of worry.

After much thought, Estella finally said to Selene, “Whoever’s behind this is clearly targeting me. If I announce my resignation, the arts center won’t suffer any further damage.”
Selene snapped, “I haven’t even stood up for you yet, and you’re already talking about quitting? Won’t that just make everyone think the accusations are true?”
Estella sighed. “But there’s no better way right now.”
Selene refused without hesitation. “We agreed to start this together, to share the good and the bad. How could I kick you out the second something happens to you? Don’t say another word. I’m not letting you quit. But to keep anyone from harassing you in the next few days, go home and rest for a bit.”
Estella nodded. “Alright. If anything happens, you have to tell me.”
She left the building.
A flashy motorcycle sped toward her.
On the back was a girl dressed in loud, punk–style clothes.
Before Estella could react, the girl hurled an egg in her direction.
A scream rang out, followed by a shout: “Homewrecker, drop dead!”
Estella instinctively turned to the side, but she couldn’t dodge completely. The egg splattered on her coat, leaving a big, messy stain.
The motorcycle was gone in an instant.
Estella looked down at her coat helplessly.
A wave of powerlessness surged in her chest.
She turned and began walking home, one heavy step at a time.
People stared as she passed. Some pointed. Others whispered behind their hands.
But Estella didn’t seem to hear a thing. She just kept walking, quietly, alone.

When she got home, Victoria called. Her voice was cautious.
“Estella, I saw the news… are you alright?”
Estella tried to sound upbeat. “I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
Victoria sighed. “I still think it’s too hard for you to be doing this on your own. Now with everything happening, there’s no one to protect you.
“If you ask me… I know Nathaniel made mistakes, but he was good to you. If you got back together with him, maybe you wouldn’t have to struggle so much…‘
Afraid she was wavering again, Estella quickly cut her off. “Mom, have you already forgotten everything he and his sister did to me? What I’m going through now doesn’t even compare to what he put me through back then.”
Victoria spoke gently. “But your reputation is ruined now. Can the arts center even keep going? If it closes down, you’ll be stuck with all the debt… your life will only get harder from here….”
Estella’s tone turned firm. “Mom, I’ll handle this. Please, stay out of it. Just promise me you won’t watch the news, and don’t contact Nathaniel. Please? I’m begging you.”
Heart aching for her daughter, Victoria gave in.
“Alright. I understand. I promise.”
Estella hung up, changed out of her clothes, and took a shower.
Then she checked her phone.
All night, the group chat had been filled with messages from parents asking for refunds. Several teachers had said they wanted to resign.
Estella felt overwhelmed.
Her business had barely gotten off the ground… was it really going to end like this?
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Estella went to answer it.
Standing outside was Nathaniel.
Without hesitation, she moved to close the door.
But he blocked it, his face full of sincerity. “Estella, let me help you.”
