Nathaniel let out a helpless sigh. “Estella, can you stop treating me like your enemy? I’ve really decided to change. All the things you used to hate–I’ve stopped doing them. You’re beautiful. Of course you’ll attract the wrong kind of men… Jonathan’s fine, I guess, a decent guy. But that Winson? He’s trash. He’s not right for you…”
Estella couldn’t believe he had the nerve to call someone else trash. Wasn’t he the perfect definition of it himself?
“Maybe Winson has a questionable dating history, but at least he’s never hurt me,” she said coldly. “And he’s far more respectful and gentlemanly than you ever were. So stop flinging mud at other people.”
Nathaniel froze. That hit deep. She really thought he was worse than Winson?
He looked wounded. “Estella, I thought… I thought my recent changes might show
you how serious I am. Do you really still see me as that man you used to hate? I know you don’t trust me, but please–believe me when I say I’m trying…”
“Enough.” Estella stood. Her voice was flat, expression unreadable. “What’s the point of all this? We’ve already turned the page. Get some rest–I’m leaving.” She walked out of the room without another word.
Nathaniel felt a bitter twist in his chest. He remembered how he used to treat her the same way. Cold. Dismissive. Never listened. Now that indifference had come back to cut him like a knife. He finally understood what it meant to regret.
Winson was released from the police station and came straight to the hospital to find Estella. “I’m sorry,
Estella,” he said, voice hoarse. “If I hadn’t been so reckless in the past, Britney wouldn’t have snapped like that and tried to hurt you…”
His eyes were rimmed with red. His whole demeanor was subdued, like someone who’d suddenly grown up overnight. He’d learned the truth from his mother. Britney had really given birth to his child—and he’d never known. His father had flown into a rage, furious at both him and his mother for how things had been handled.
Winson had decided: he would take responsibility. He would acknowledge the child and be a proper father. But Britney? He no longer loved her. He would never marry her.
Estella asked quietly, “She stabbed Nathaniel. The Hartwell family won’t let that go. What do you plan to do?”
Britney’s breakdown wasn’t out of nowhere. The Shane family was partly to blame. If they hadn’t taken her child away, maybe things wouldn’t have spiraled out of control.

Winson’s voice was low and heavy. “I know I’m responsible, too. When she gets out… I’ll compensate her financially. But I don’t think she’ll be convicted.” He paused. “She’s been diagnosed with severe depression.”
Estella was startled, then slowly nodded. That explained a lot.
After a long silence, Winson turned to her again. “You probably think I’m horrible, don’t you?”
She thought for a while before replying. “It’s not my place to judge your personal life. But I think… it’s a good thing for that child, that you’re stepping up.” Kids were innocent. Having a father in their life–no matter how complicated the adults were–was still better than growing up without one.
Winson blinked rapidly, clearly trying not to cry. He lowered his voice. “I know I’ve lost the chance to pursue you. But still… I want to get in line. If you’re ever tired, ever hurt, and need someone to lean on… I hope you’ll think of me.”
Estella didn’t respond.
Next to her, Jonathan arched a brow. He hadn’t even gotten out of the “application stage,” and this guy was already trying to cut in line?
