Estella led Jonathan to a quiet bench nearby and asked, “Why are you here?”

Jonathan replied calmly, “After Winson got into trouble, his father contacted me for legal help. That’s when I heard you were involved.”

Estella looked a little guilty. “You’re always so busy, and I keep dragging you into things…”

Jonathan gave her a warm smile. “Your troubles are never a burden.”

She hesitated for a moment, then spoke again. “Nathaniel was injured saving me. Even though I don’t like him, I think I should stay and take care of him–for the sake of decency, if nothing else. You don’t mind, do you?”

Jonathan’s lips twitched in amusement. She still cared what he thought.

“Of course not,” he said gently. “It’s the right thing to do. And actually… I’m grateful to him for saving you.”

He meant every word. As long as Estella was safe, it didn’t matter who’d taken the hit. And he had no fear she’d look back–he trusted her.

Two hours later, Nathaniel was finally wheeled out of surgery.

Madeline, now a mess of tears, clung to her son while still managing to throw barbed words at Estella.

Estella stood off to the side and didn’t acknowledge her.

Nathaniel was still under anesthesia and couldn’t respond.

That night, Estella and Jonathan stayed at the hospital to wait for him to wake up.

When he did, the first face he saw wasn’t the one he hoped for.

“Mom? Where’s Estella?”

Madeline bristled. “She’s out there. Why do you care about her? That heartless woman! After everything she did to you, why did you even bother saving her?”

Her voice droned on, but Nathaniel interrupted, annoyed. “Mom, I want to see Estella.”

Though reluctant, Madeline eventually gave in. “Fine. She’s outside. I’ll go get her.”

She stepped out into the hallway and barked at Estella, “Nathaniel’s awake. Get in there and

Estella ignored her and turned to Jonathan. “I’ll check on him. Wait here for me?”

Jonathan nodded gently. “Go ahead.”

Inside the room, Nathaniel’s face lit up when he saw her.

“Estella,” he murmured, voice tinged with longing. “Thank you for staying.”

He shifted in bed, pretending to be weaker than he was. “While I’m recovering… could you stay with me? Just until I’m better?”

Estella’s voice remained calm and even. “I appreciate you saving me, and I’ll cover your

medical expenses. I’ll check in on you regularly, and I’ll hire a nurse to help take care of you. If you want a gesture of gratitude–within reason–I can manage that.”

Nathaniel’s smile faltered. “And if my request is for you to come back to me?”

She looked him dead in the eye. “That’s over the line. I can’t do that. Try another.”

He was looking at a woman he could no longer control.

Nathaniel sighed. “You weren’t like this before. You used to care so much. Even if I had a cold, you’d panic.”

Estella didn’t bite. “If you’re not feeling well, I’ll go call your mom.”

“No–please,” he said quickly. “Just… talk to me for a while.”

She found his plea oddly ironic.

For three years of marriage, he’d barely spoken to her.

He never listened, never cared.

Now he wanted her company? Her voice?

Estella felt the absurdity of it all wash over her.

“I’m tired,” she said, standing. “And you’ve just come out of surgery. You should save your strength.”

His eyes darkened at her rejection.
