Winson looked dejected. “I actually felt really bad for Britney… I didn’t think she’d team up with Nathaniel.”

Jonathan said calmly, “You should feel bad. Whether she approached you with good intentions. or not, you did play with her feelings.”

Winson flushed under the blunt accusation and muttered, “I was just young and stupid…”

“Being young isn’t an excuse,” Jonathan replied sharply. “A mistake is a mistake.”

Winson had nothing to say.

He glanced at Estella, hoping she wouldn’t look disgusted, but she wasn’t even looking at him.

Estella said to Jonathan, “If Britney willingly went along with Nathaniel, then there’s no reason for me to defend her. But I do want to go to the hospital and say everything to Nathaniel face- to–face.”

“I’ll go with you,” Jonathan said.

“I want to go too,” Winson added. “I need to ask him what the hell he was thinking.”

He finally understood that Nathaniel had dragged up his past just to stop him from getting close to Estella.

Jonathan glanced at him and said, “You don’t have the mind for this. Focus on your business before you drag the Shane family down with you.”

He wasn’t wrong. If Winson kept clinging to Estella, Nathaniel might go after the Shane family

next.

Winson wanted to argue, but remembering Nathaniel’s connections to the Monroe family, he lost all his fire.

Now he finally understood how important power and status really were. If he were stronger or had Jonathan’s brains and network, Nathaniel wouldn’t be able to crush him like this.

A fire lit in his chest. “Got it. I’m heading back to the office.”

He gave Estella one last look and said, “I meant what I said. Even if I’m just a backup, I’m willing

to wait.”

Before Estella could respond, Jonathan said, “Mr. Winson, take care of the mess your exes left behind before talking about pursuing Estella.”

Winson used to mess around a lot. Britney was just the one who slipped through the cracks. Miranda had taken care of most of the others before they exploded.

Feeling thoroughly embarrassed, Winson quickly said, “I have something to do. I’m leaving,” and rushed out without looking back.

Jonathan went with Estella to the hospital.

As soon as Nathaniel saw her, he smiled–until he saw Jonathan beside her.

Estella looked at Jonathan and said quietly, “I want to talk to him alone.”

Jonathan nodded. “I’ll wait outside. Call me if anything happens.”

He wasn’t going to leave her unguarded, not after what Nathaniel had done before.

Once Jonathan stepped out, Nathaniel relaxed a little.

“You didn’t go to work today. Did you come just to check on me?” he asked hopefully.

Estella’s face was cold. “Nathaniel, did you bring Britney to Javerton?”

His expression froze.

“Did that lawyer tell you that? Estella, don’t believe him. He just wants to turn you against me.”

She scoffed. “Jonathan’s never lied to me. You, on the other hand, lie every time you open your mouth.”

Nathaniel winced.

“I didn’t know she’d hurt you. I just wanted you to see what kind of person Winson was, so you’d stop giving him chances…”

“Really?” Estella sneered. “Then why did you give her parents money? Why were you so quick to make sure she went to jail? You’re disgusting, Nathaniel.”

He clenched his fists and bit his lip, but there was nothing left to say. She knew everything now. No excuse would save him.

He yanked down the collar of his shirt, revealing the stab wound on his back. “Even if it was all planned, I still took a knife for you. Doesn’t that count for something? Doesn’t that prove how

much I care?”
