Nathaniel grabbed her hand. “It’s not true. What Isabelle said isn’t true. I never planned to marry her. With her, it’s just business.”

At last Estella looked at him.

A spark lit in Nathaniel’s eyes as he pressed on, “You must know — I moved my office here, right next to yours. I waste all that time coming back and forth, all for you.”

Estella’s tone was flat. “If Mr. Hartwell wants to torment himself, that’s his choice. Don’t claim it’s for me. Honestly, I don’t even want to see you. Whether you marry Isabelle or whatever reason you’re with her, it has nothing to do with me. Next time you see me, treat me like a stranger.”

She pulled away and walked off quickly.

In Selene’s hospital room, Estella found her sipping rice soup. She smiled faintly. “Still hurting anywhere?”

“Just at first. It doesn’t hurt now,” Selene said. “What about you? You’ve been working non–stop. Should I cut my leave short?”

“No,” Estella replied, setting down the side dishes she’d bought. “Don’t worry about work. I can handle it.”

Selene studied her face. “You don’t look too good. Who upset you?”

Estella sighed. “Ran into Nathaniel and Isabelle on the way here. Bad luck.”

“Definitely bad luck,” Selene agreed. “Forget them. They’re a perfect match in awfulness. Anyway, aren’t you going to Sinovia with Mr. Bennett this weekend? Did you buy a swimsuit yet?” She grinned.

Estella shot her a look. “I’m not going swimming. Why would I buy one?”

Selene teased, “You and Mr. Bennett are great together, but you’re both so slow. If you show up in a swimsuit, I bet sparks will fly fast. Thunder, fire — you’ll be married before you know it. I’ve already prepared my wedding gifts. I’ll give you extra red envelopes.”

Estella hadn’t expected the woman who swore off marriage to start pushing her toward it.

“I’m not in a hurry. Stop worrying,” she said.

“Fine, if you’re not in a hurry, I’ll be for you,” Selene said with a laugh.

Outside the door, Nathaniel stood with fists clenched, his eyes like shards of ice.

Estella was going to Sinovia with Jonathan?

In the three years they’d been together, he had never once traveled with her.

And the first man to take her on a trip was Jonathan.

Jealousy burned in him, mixed with regret for all the times he had neglected her.

If only they had more good memories together, maybe she wouldn’t have left so easily.

He couldn’t stop Jonathan from taking her away.

But he could go along.

If he was there, he would make sure they had no chance to grow closer.

At the hospital entrance, Isabelle finally spotted Madam Rosemary coming out.

But Nathaniel wasn’t there yet, so she approached alone.

“Madam Rosemary, I’m Isabelle. The Monroe family and the Bennett family go back a long way. I heard you were in Javerton, so I wanted to visit you.”

The old woman’s face was cool, her silence sharper than words.

She glanced at her bodyguard, who immediately stepped forward and gestured politely for Isabelle to leave.

Isabelle knew if she didn’t move, she’d be carried off. Reluctantly, she stepped aside and watched Madam Rosemary go.

When Nathaniel reappeared, she snapped, “Where were you? She finally came out and you missed it.”

“Did

you speak to her?” Nathaniel asked.

“I did,” Isabelle admitted, then sulked. “But she ignored me.”
