“I won’t be a bother!” Wendy said with a bright smile. “The more, the merrier! Besides, isn’t Ms. Hayes joining you too?”

Jonathan’s tone turned firm. “She’s different.”

Wendy froze.

She hadn’t expected him to admit so easily that Estella wasn’t the same as the others.

Her lips tightened, but she forced a smile. “Well then, Ms. Hayes might feel lonely on her own. I can keep her company.”

She turned to Estella with a playful wink. “Ms. Hayes, you wouldn’t refuse me, would you?”

Estella thought her shameless. After all the things Wendy had done to her, was she supposed to pretend and play nice?

She wasn’t that magnanimous.

Her voice was cool. “That won’t be necessary. I already know several of the lawyers here, so I won’t be lonely.”

Because of Lana, she’d gotten to know quite a few of the women in the firm. They shared interests, ate together sometimes, and got along well.

Wendy hadn’t expected to be snubbed so bluntly. Rage flared inside her, though she hid it behind clenched teeth.

Jonathan ignored her completely. “Let’s go,” he said to Estella and the others. “Check in first, put your things away, then we’ll meet for dinner.”

The group had seen enough to understand Jonathan’s attitude. They dismissed Wendy entirely.

Left standing alone, Wendy seethed, but she still refused to leave. She was determined to use this trip to win Jonathan back.

Back in her hotel room, Estella had just unpacked when the doorbell rang.

Her brows lifted. “What is it?”

Wendy bristled at her calm, unruffled expression. “Don’t get cocky, Estella. You think just because Jonathan likes you, you’ll marry him?”

Estella didn’t bother to explain her relationship with Jonathan, but she was tired of being harassed out of nowhere.

Estella almost laughed. “Ms. Moore, arranged marriages went out ages ago. Even if Jonathan’s grandmother approves of you, it doesn’t matter. If you truly married Jonathan, would you be living with him or with his grandmother?”

Wendy hadn’t expected such a sharp tongue. Fury flashed in her eyes.

“Even if Jonathan doesn’t like me now, he will. And I’ve looked into you you’ve been divorced. A divorced woman is damaged goods. No respectable family would take a secondhand daughter–in–law! Jonathan’s never been married. You’ll never enter the Bennett family!”

Estella’s eyes narrowed. Her voice chilled. “You studied abroad, didn’t you? And yet you still talk like it’s ancient times. What you just said that’s what’s truly disgraceful.”

Without another word, she shut the door.

Wendy stared, stunned. She wanted to kick it open, but if Jonathan found out she was throwing a tantrum, it would only make him despise her more.

Grinding her teeth, she turned and stormed off.

That evening, Luminary Partners & Co. gathered in a private dining room.

The usually serious lawyers were dressed casually, laughing, joking, and lighthearted.

Estella arrived early and sat beside Lana.
