Lana crossed her arms and said, If a husband hands over all his income, doesn’t pressure his wife to have a second or third child, manages the inlaw relationships, and even if he’s too busy to come home, still gives his wife emotional support on time well then, marriage might be acceptable. But if he can’t do that, then for a woman, marriage is nothing but tribulation.

The male colleague who had argued earlier fell silent.

Men like that were rarer than phoenix feathers.

Lana went on, I’ve handled enough divorce cases to see the truth. Men get married because they want children, and they want a livein maid to take care of them, their kids, and their parents. Meanwhile, the wife’s family asks for a bride price, which is really just selling their daughter. Best case, the money goes back into the new household. Then the woman still has to hold down a job, help support the family, and do the housework. Tell me, how is that fair for women?

The other female lawyers chimed in.

Being a wife is such a bargain, we might as well marry women ourselves! Why even bother with men?

Exactly,” Lana agreed. I earn enough to cover the bride price, and I can support a household. So why not marry a man to be the wife? The only problem is, can men give me children? No, they can’t. In the end, marriage is just exploitation for women not worth it at all.

Their tirade left the male lawyers speechless.

At that moment, Jonathan walked in.

He had heard most of it, and his brows arched as his eyes landed on Estella.

She gave him a sheepish smile.

In truth, she agreed with Lana.

She’d lived through marriage herself and Nathaniel had proven just how bad a man could

  1. be.

Still, it felt awkward to air those thoughts so publicly, especially with Jonathan present.

Jonathan sat down beside her and said quietly, Lana’s right. Most men are like that.

Estella blinked in surprise.

Then he added, But there are exceptions. I’m one of them.

His shameless confidence made her laugh despite herself.

With Jonathan there, Lana dropped the subject and changed the conversation. The boss was a man too, after all, and she knew when to give him face.

Then she tilted her head, studying him. Boss, you look different today.

Everyone turned to look. Estella did too.

Usually, Jonathan wore suits or crisp shirts in shades of black, white, or gray.

Tonight, though, he was in a hoodie, his hair not slicked back, his usual gravitas softened. Combined with his striking face, he looked more like a college heartthrob than a stern lawyer.

Lana’s eyes widened. Then she looked at Estella, a grin spreading across her face. Well, would you look at that Estella’s wearing a hoodie too. Matching outfits? Are you two in couple’s clothes?

Estella flushed scarlet.

They definitely weren’t couple’s clothes.

Jonathan stayed calm, quietly having the wine in front of them switched to juice.

Estella whispered, Everyone else is drinking. Won’t it look bad if we don’t?

Jonathan chuckled. Don’t worry. Our firm doesn’t play drinking games. If I don’t drink, no one will pressure you either.

She exhaled in relief. She had always dreaded being forced to drink at dinners.

Jonathan was strict at work, but outside, he was an easygoing leader.

He let everyone order whatever they liked, laughed at their banter, and even allowed them to poke fun at him.

Unlike other companies where dinners turned crude, with dirty jokes or women being pressured to drink and perform, Luminary Partners & Co. was different.

Here, the female lawyers outtalked the men easily, and Jonathan’s refusal to tolerate toxic traditions set the tone. The men treated their female colleagues with respect.
