“Estella, I’m here on a business trip. Turns out we’re in the same hotel. Want to take a walk together?”

Her lips twisted. “It’s the middle of the night. Who in their right mind would want to walk around with you now?”

She turned to leave, but Nathaniel blocked her path.

“I know who you came with. You’re here with Jonathan, aren’t you? If you can spend time with him, why can’t you spare a little time for me?”

Estella nearly laughed out loud at the absurdity.

“Jonathan is my friend. Being with him is normal. You’re my ex–husband and an enemy. Why should I waste a single second with you?”

But Nathaniel seemed immune to her words. “Let’s just talk, Estella. Please.”

Her patience snapped. “Talk? About what? Every time you say that, nothing you say is worth listening to.”

She ignored him and stepped into the elevator.

Nathaniel followed.

When he moved closer, Estella whipped out her pepper spray. “Try it just one more step.”

He lifted both hands. “Alright, I won’t come closer. Don’t be nervous. I just want to talk.”

She kept the spray aimed at him, her guard high.

Nathaniel’s voice softened, tinged with regret. “I realized we never once took a trip together. Doesn’t that feel like a pity to you?”

Estella sneered. “A pity? Not in the slightest.”

What was past was past.

He sighed, then held out a shopping bag. “It gets chilly at night. I thought you might not have packed enough. I bought you a coat — pink, your favorite color…”

Her expression hardened, and she refused to take it.

“Estella, I know you and Jonathan aren’t together yet. If you can accept his pursuit, why not mine? We’re both chasing you. Shouldn’t we be on equal ground? It’s only fair.”

Estella barked out a laugh. “Equal ground? Don’t flatter yourself. He never hurt me. You did.”

“Yes, I was a bastard,” Nathaniel admitted, his tone careful. “But it was the wrong time. I was broken, still stuck in the past. If you and I had met now, I would be better for you than Jonathan could ever be. Please, Estella – give me a chance.”

The elevator chimed. Her floor.

Estella bolted out, but Nathaniel caught up.

Just as she was about to close her door, he wedged himself in the frame.

Her face was tight with anger.

He extended the bag again. “I only want you to have the coat.”

She didn’t want anything of his.

“Estella, if you don’t accept it, I won’t leave,” he pressed.

Disgust rising, Estella snatched the bag just to get rid of him.

He let go, and the door finally shut.

The moment it closed, she tossed the bag straight into the trash.

She couldn’t believe he’d followed her all the way to Sinovia.

Why did this man never stop haunting her?
