The sun outside was blazing, and Estella felt too lazy to go out. She typed a reply to Jonathan:
“I’ll head over around sunset.”
His response came almost instantly.
“Alright. If you get bored, there’s a resort nearby with some little shops you can browse.”
Of course, Jonathan, as the head of the firm, had to stick with the group activities. Estella didn’t want him separating from everyone else just for her sake, so she agreed.
After finishing her meal, she wandered down to the resort. The streets were lively, filled with stalls and shops. She strolled leisurely, eventually stopping to pick out a small gift for Jonathan – a way to thank him for bringing her along.
Just as she wrapped up her purchase, her phone buzzed.
“Ms. Hayes?” The caller ID was the hospital. “Mr. Hartwell is about to go into surgery. His emergency contact lists you. Could you come by to sign the consent form?”
Estella froze. She didn’t want to go. But she also couldn’t just leave Nathaniel to die.
Fine. She would stop by, sign whatever needed signing, and then leave. Nothing more.
She hailed a cab to the hospital, signed the forms, and waited outside the operating room. Two hours crawled by before Nathaniel was finally wheeled out.
When his eyes landed on her, his pale face softened into a smile.
“Estella… you still care about me.” His voice was weak, but his gaze clung to her.
Estella ignored him completely, asking the doctor about his condition instead. Then she followed them to the recovery room.
The nurse hadn’t arrived yet, so she stayed seated in silence.
Nathaniel couldn’t stop staring at her. His eyes were unwavering, as if he could burn her face
into memory.
Estella wanted to gouge them out.
When the nurse finally arrived, she stood up immediately.
Nathaniel’s eyes reddened. “Estella… don’t go.”

She turned back, her expression like ice. “Nathaniel, stop with the pitiful act. Whether you’re sick or dying, don’t drag me into it. Don’t waste my time.”
The bluntness pierced him like a blade. His lips moved, but no sound came out.
Estella didn’t spare him another look. She walked straight out of the hospital.
Meanwhile, Jonathan was being pulled into silly games by his team. He longed to slip away and go back to Estella, but the group wouldn’t let him go. His expression was utterly deadpan. He silently vowed that once they were back at work, he’d pile extra cases on them for revenge.
Wendy seized the opportunity to approach him.
“Jonathan, do you know where Estella went?”
He didn’t respond.
Wendy gritted her teeth, shoving her phone at him. “See? Estella’s two–timing you. She came all the way to Sinovia, and she’s still tangled up with her ex–husband!”
On the screen was a photo of Nathaniel in a hospital bed with Estella standing beside him.
A stab of jealousy twisted in Jonathan’s chest. But it passed quickly.
He trusted her.
His gaze went cold. “How do you even know where Estella went? Were you following her?”
Caught off guard, Wendy sputtered. “Jonathan, aren’t you the least bit bothered? She’s betraying you!”
—
“One picture proves nothing. And I know Estella – she will never go back to Nathaniel.”
That firepit? She wouldn’t jump into it twice.
Wendy’s jaw tightened. “You’re blinded by her! Estella is stringing you and Nathaniel along—”
Jonathan cut her off by pulling out his phone.
“Estella, did you go out? Do you want me to pick you up?”
In the taxi back to the hotel, Estella blinked in surprise. How did he already know?
She didn’t want to hide it. “Nathaniel was sick. I went to the hospital, but I’m on my way back
