Wilson blinked, lowering his voice as if offering some great wisdom. Mr. Hartwell, if you take women’s words at face value, you’ll lose every time. They say one thing, but deep down they all admire strength. You think she’d marry some weak man with no money, even if he treats her well? No way. If you don’t use a little leverage, she’ll end up marrying someone else.

At the thought of Estella standing beside Jonathanor worse, another man entirely— Nathaniel’s expression grew darker, his jaw tense.

Wilson saw it and knew his words were hitting home. He pressed on eagerly. Look, why not let me take over Estella’s little business? Once her independence is gone, you make sure she gets pregnant. That’s it. A child will bind her to you forever. Motherhood ties a woman down tighter than anything else. Don’t get her a nanny eitherlet her be the one stuck at home. When one kid grows up, give her another. Then another. Before she knows it, her whole life revolves around kids and family, and she’ll never get out. She won’t have the time or energy to chase her career anymore.

He chuckled at his own plan. Women today just have it too easy. They don’t want to marry, or they marry and run straight to divorce. Especially the collegeeducated onesthey think staying home with kids is beneath them. Ha. What woman hasn’t lived like that? They’re not special. They just want to control men, and we shouldn’t let them. Otherwise, won’t they end up running the world?

Nathaniel was silent for a long moment, his brow furrowed. You may have a point. But right now she can’t even stand to be in the same room with me. How exactly am I supposed to talk her intohaving a baby?

He was tired of Estella’s coldness, tired of being pushed away at every turn.

Wilson gave a sly grin. That’s because you’re too much of a gentleman. If you used stronger measures, she might be furious at first, but once she’s carrying your child? Once she’s tied to you? She won’t be able to escape.

Nathaniel’s eyes narrowed. Stronger measures?

Wilson leaned in like he was sharing a secret. I’ve got a friend with connections. He can get you something that will make sure you succeed. If you want it, I’ll handle it for you. Guaranteed.

Nathaniel didn’t respond, his silence unreadable.

Wilson, however, took it as consent. As soon as he left Nathaniel’s office, he pulled out his phone and dialed.

Victor, you still have that stuff? The kind you used last time tobring women home?

Victor’s voice crackled on the line. I do. But it’s not cheap, and I need cash. No credit. Can you pay up?

Wilson smirked. That’s nothing. I’ll bring the money. You get me the goods fast.

Deal,Victor said.

With Wilson out of her hair, Estella’s workdays felt noticeably calmer. For once she wasn’t fighting fires every morning.

One afternoon she even left the office early and stopped by the market, picking up vegetables and fresh meat to cook herself a rare homemade meal.

On her way back, she spotted a familiar figurean elderly woman she’d run into at the hospital.

Little girl!Madam Rosemary’s eyes lit up the moment she saw her. You live around here too?

Estella smiled politely. Yes. Are you visiting someone?

Visiting? Hmph.Madam Rosemary’s tone sharpened. My grandson lives here, but he won’t even tell me which building. He’s always buried in work, never makes time to see me. I’m old, you know. Old people need company. But him? He just tosses me aside like a burden!

Estella listened quietly, then said with a sigh, Maybe he’s just busy. These days, work can be overwhelmingespecially for young people. It’s not easy.”

Busy?Madam Rosemary scoffed. He’s the boss! Can’t a boss delegate? What’s so important he can’t visit his own grandmother? He just doesn’t want to bother with me, that’s what it is.

Estella didn’t know how to answer. From the grandson’s point of view, she could imagine long days, endless meetings, the kind of schedule that leaves no room for family. But from the grandmother’s side, she could also understand the loneliness, the aching need for attention.

She offered a compromise. I finished work early today. I’m cooking dinner at home. If you haven’t eaten yet, why don’t you come with me?

Madam Rosemary brightened instantly. That sounds wonderful! And maybe if I’m there when my grandson gets home, he won’t be able to dodge me this time.

Estella could only smile. She guided the older woman back to her apartment and, on the way, sent Jonathan a message: I’m making dinner tonight. I’ll save some for you. If you work late, stop by and pick it up.”
