Estella grinned. “So you’d spoil your own granddaughter, but other people’s daughters you’re fine with sending off to suffer. Isn’t that a double standard? You know marriage can be hard on a woman, that’s why you wouldn’t let your granddaughter go through it.”

That left the old lady speechless. She couldn’t deny it.

If it were her own, she’d never bear to see her suffer. But someone else’s daughter? Marrying into her family was supposed to be an honor.

At least she had the self–awareness to admit it. After a moment, she sighed. “You’re right, little girl. I know the truth. I just… can’t change my thinking.”

Estella smiled and carried out the finished dishes. “Do you eat spicy stuff, ma’am? I made two dipping sauces–one spicy, one mild.”

“I do! I love spicy!”

Though Madam Rosemary was picky about food, her taste buds still welcomed heat.

Estella laughed and stirred some chili into both bowls.

The older woman took one bite, her eyes curving with pleasure. “Delicious! You cook wonderfully, and you’re such a thoughtful girl. If I had another grandson, I’d insist he you.”

Estella teased, “All your grandsons are married already?”

She sighed. “The elder one, yes. The younger, not yet. A priest told me his fate was to marry the daughter of an old family friend, but he refuses. Stubborn boy.”

Estella chuckled. “Ma’am, that’s forcing a marriage. Young people can’t be pushed like that.”

The old woman sniffed. “What else can I do? He’s nearly thirty and never so much as dated a girl. His fate says his love life is shallow. I worry he’ll never marry, so yes, I feel like I have to force it.”

Estella raised her brows playfully. “What if he’s not into girls at all? Maybe he likes boys.”

Madam Rosemary froze, horrified. “Don’t say that! It’s not impossible, though. His mother says not to rush, but I’m the only one who truly worries. I need to get him married, fast.”
