The nanny’s face twisted with rage. “Compensation? For what? What man doesn’t hit his wife? Arthur’s mother sits around at home all day, eating and doing nothing. My son hitting her- what’s wrong with that? And Arthur–just like her, spoiled and rebellious, always talking back to

his father!”

Arthur’s small body trembled, but his voice rose in a shout. “That’s not true! Mom works at the supermarket every day. She cooks for me, she cleans, she takes care of everything. Dad doesn’t work, doesn’t do chores, he just hits her! Dad is a bad man!”

The nanny’s fury boiled over. She raised her hand to strike him. “How dare father like that, you ungrateful little brat!”

Estella stepped in, blocking the blow. “What’s wrong with you? Hitting a child? I’ll call the police right now!”

Isabelle caught the nanny’s arm and sneered. “Why are you interfering, Estella? That’s his grandmother teaching him a lesson. Since when is that your business?”

Estella’s laugh was sharp and cold. “When she bullies a child, it becomes everyone’s business.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Isabelle replied loftily. “Isn’t it a wife’s duty to tend to the home? Why make a spectacle out of it? And if she was beaten, maybe she deserved it. Maybe she was out messing around with some other man.”

The words made Estella’s blood run hot.

So caring for the family was a duty, but being beaten for it was acceptable. The wife was always wrong, even when she wasn’t.

“Isabelle, you’re a woman too. Don’t you feel ashamed saying this?”

“Why would I?” Isabelle said lightly. “The nanny told me herself–her daughter–in–law is lazy and greedy. And you, Estella, if you’re so eager to get her a lawyer, fine. I’ll hire one too, for my nanny. Don’t think you can bully the people around me. I wouldn’t be surprised if that woman’s just like you–scheming to get money through marriage and divorce. Maybe the two of you are exactly the same.”

Estella’s hand moved before she thought. The crack of the slap echoed through the store.

“Isabelle, aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”

The younger woman staggered and fell, clutching her face.

Estella’s chest trembled with anger. The things he’d done to her, the scars he’d left–those wounds were still raw.

Isabelle sobbed out her version of events.

Nathaniel frowned at Estella. “It isn’t right to meddle in other people’s family matters. And as for a husband hitting his wife–sometimes it’s just losing his temper. Can’t the wife endure a little? Every marriage requires give and take. You put up with me, I put up with you. That’s how it lasts.”

The absurdity of his words made Estella laugh bitterly.

“You’re saying a husband hitting his wife isn’t a problem?”

Nathaniel didn’t flinch. He’d seen it plenty growing up, his father’s hand raised against his mother. She had endured. He thought it normal.

“Women will suffer grievances in marriage–it’s inevitable,” he said evenly. “It’s not easy for men either. We carry heavy burdens. Can’t a wife show some understanding when her husband loses control?”

Estella’s smile turned cutting. “So this is what you really believe. Excuses for men, cloaked as reason. Pathetic. Plenty of women go out, work hard, shoulder stress. Funny how they don’t ‘lose control‘ and beat their husbands. Men like you only lash out because you think women can’t fight back. It’s shameless. And shamelessness should have its limits.”

His face darkened. “You’re too extreme, Estella. Marriage is about living together. Nursing grudges, turning everything into a battle between men and women–that only destroys families.”
