Chapter 196 A Different Kind of Man

Estella’s laugh was sharp, brittle. “There’s nothing left to say between us. Fine then-see you in court. Mr. Bennett and I will make sure Arthur’s mother gets justice.”

When she turned to leave, Nathaniel stepped in her way. “Estella, what can Jonathan really give you? Tell me. You left me just to pick up after him? Today he dumps a child in your lap, tomorrow it’ll be some client to care for. Do you really think that’s better than being with me?”

Her gaze cut through him, full of disgust. “Mr. Bennett is a professional, a gentleman. You? You’re nothing.”

She took Arthur’s hand and walked

away.

Nathaniel’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles blanched. He spat out a curse.

Isabelle slipped closer, voice soft, coaxing. “Nathaniel, don’t bother with her. She’ll never understand you. Only I do. Only I can share what’s in your heart.”

But he brushed her off coldly. “I’m heading back to the office. Shop on your own.”

If not for the Monroe family’s influence, he wouldn’t have bothered to accompany her at all.

“Nathaniel!” Isabelle called after him, her chest burning. She gave him everything, yet he stayed distant, leaving her to choke on the bitter taste of rejection.

That evening, Estella accompanied Arthur to the hospital. His mother, Evelyn, had woken.

The moment she saw her son, her eyes brimmed with tears.

Estella’s heart tightened at the sight of the bandages swathing Evelyn’s face, hands, and feet.

They spoke quietly, and the full weight of Evelyn’s suffering emerged.

“I’ve been beaten for seven, eight years,” Evelyn whispered hoarsely. “When I told my mother, she told me to endure it. My brother said if I wanted to fight back, I should, but if I couldn’t win, that was my weakness. My father said a divorced daughter can’t come home-that it would shame the family.

I had nowhere to go. I raised Arthur alone, no job, no shelter, so I kept enduring. When he started kindergarten, I found work. But then his father demanded my wages too. His mother is no better-hiding their money, taking mine, and still telling me it was my duty to serve them. When I asked for divorce, the beatings got worse. They told me since my family had taken money from them, I belonged to them forever.”

Her sobs broke into shuddering breaths. “I only want to leave with my son. Why is it so hard? The pain-God, the pain is unbearable. And when I prayed my parents would stand by me, they said I was his wife now, told me to stop thinking too much, that things would be better once Arthur graduated college. Why can’t anyone help me?”

Estella’s own eyes blurred as she pulled Evelyn into an embrace. “You’ll get out. I swear you

will.”

Later, she walked Arthur home.

Jonathan returned early, carrying takeout and sweet soup.

“Sorry for burdening you with Arthur,” he said.

Estella shook her head. “I chose this. Don’t apologize.”

The three of them ate together. But Estella couldn’t shake Evelyn’s words, her mood sinking under their weight.

Jonathan had already heard. “You don’t need to worry about Evelyn’s case. Her injuries are proof enough. I’ll get her divorced, and she’ll win proper compensation. Her husband will be forced to pay child support.”

Estella sighed. “And when he refuses to let her go?”

In her eyes, a man who could divorce cleanly, without clinging or tormenting his ex-wife, was already a rare breed.

“I’ll bring her into our firm as an assistant,” Jonathan replied. “We’ll move her to a safer neighborhood. With the right protection, she’ll be far better off.”

Estella gave a faint, weary smile. “You can shield her for now, Mr. Bennett. But you can’t shield her forever.”

Jonathan paused, then answered quietly. “Maybe not. But what I can do, I will.”

Her gaze lingered on him, heavy with thought. He truly was a different kind of man.
