Chapter 41 Shadows from the Past
Estella didn’t want to answer Trent’s question. If she started, she’d have to mention Nathaniel-and just the thought of that man disgusted her.
So she changed the subject. “I heard the orchestra’s going to perform in Kingston soon. It’s such a pity I won’t be able to perform this whole year.”
Trent sensed her discomfort and kindly didn’t press further.
Instead, he chatted about the upcoming performance. “It really is a shame. But it’s not a lost cause. We’re performing not only at the Kingston Concert Hall, but also at the Bennett family’s charity gala. If we’re short on performers, you might have a shot. You’ve heard of the Bennett family, right? One of the
top three families in Kingston. I hear both sons are total powerhouses. Mr. Chase is on good terms with them
too.”
Estella recalled seeing Mr. Chase arrive at the Monroe family’s banquet with the Bennett family’s eldest son. Chase really did seem well-connected.
Trent went on, a little gossipy. “Last time we played at the Bennett charity gala, we even took photos with Madam Bennett and the eldest son. A bunch of the girls were devastated when they found out he was married.”
He leaned closer, teasing, “But Mr. Jonathan isn’t married yet. That’s a golden opportunity for all you single ladies. With Mr. Chase in the picture, you never know-he might play matchmaker.”
Estella poked at her food-tomato and scrambled eggs-and replied flatly, “Marrying into a powerful family isn’t as easy as it sounds. Ordinary people like us should just stick to practicing piano.”
Trent burst out laughing and gave her a playful look. “I think your chances are pretty good.”
After lunch, the two returned to rehearsal, joking along the way.
Behind them, Isabelle stared at Estella with venom in her eyes.
On the weekend, Estella got ready to visit her mother in the hospital.
As she stepped out the door, she ran into Jonathan.
“Going somewhere?” he asked.
“I’m visiting my mom at the hospital,” she said.
Jonathan smiled. “What a coincidence. I need to get a new pair of contact lenses, Want to go together?”
Estella blinked. “That is a coincidence. Sure.”
As they walked, they chatted.
“You’ve always worn contacts, Mr. Jonathan? I thought you had perfect eyesight.”

“I’ve worn them for years,” he said. “I considered laser surgery, but I’m afraid of the side effects.”

Estella nodded. “That’s smart. Surgery can make your eyes more fragile. Especially in a job like where you’re constantly reading and writing.”

Then something came to her. “When I got eye strain from using my phone too much, I did some research. You could try using an e-ink screen for work-it really helps.”
Jonathan actually owned two large e-ink displays at home, but he followed her lead. “I haven’t looked into that. Maybe next time you can help me pick one out?”
Estella, remembering all the help he’d given her, agreed immediately. “Sure.”
They arrived at the hospital.
Jonathan stopped. “Thanks for letting me tag along. I’ll go run my errand while you see your mom.”
Estella smiled and waved before heading toward the inpatient wing.
As she approached the psychiatric ward, a woman’s high-pitched screams rang through the hallway.
The voice sent a jolt through her. It sounded terrifyingly familiar.
She rushed forward.
In the corridor, three nurses and Helen were struggling to restrain a woman while injecting a sedative.
Estella’s heart sank.
The woman was her mother-Victoria.
It had been a long time since Victoria had had an episode.
Her condition had been improving. They were even talking about taking her off medication soon.
But now, she was shrieking, slamming herself into the wall. Her forehead was already bruised and swollen.
Seeing her mother like this stole the breath from Estella’s lungs. Tears welled in her eyes instantly.
