Chapter 47 A Quiet Flame
Estella grew more puzzled by the day, but with no one giving her answers, she had no choice but to let it
Trent could see she truly had no idea about the fabricated scandal. He didn’t want to burden her with it either-he never believed she’d do such a thing. Besides, Mr. Chase had already made it clear: if anyone brought up the rumors again, they’d face serious consequences.
Of course, he wasn’t about to take that risk.
During rehearsal, Estella noticed Isabelle had returned. The wounds on her face seemed fully healed-her makeup concealed any trace of them. But the venom in Isabelle’s eyes when she looked at Estella hadn’t faded one bit.
Estella pretended not to notice and ignored her entirely.
If she was going to sue me, she would’ve done it already.
She figured Isabelle hadn’t followed through because she was guilty. After all, her mother had nearly suffered a breakdown because of her, and Estella had been struck by Nathaniel. That made them even.
Besides, she’d seen the news: both the Hartwell and Monroe families had been hit with multiple scandals lately, their stock prices plummeting by the day.
They were likely all too busy putting out fires to come after her. And that was just fine-less interference from the Monroes, and Nathaniel would be too tied up to bother her.
The following month passed peacefully.
She’d originally planned to treat Jonathan to a thank-you meal, but he seemed busier than ever-so much so that even a simple meal together became impossible.
So instead, Estella decided to buy him a gift.
She visited a department store, browsed for a while, and eventually chose a tie and a pair of cufflinks.
As she left, she didn’t realize Nathaniel was nearby.
Nathaniel had been stressed beyond belief lately, trying to salvage a floundering project. He was at the same department store, hoping to find a gift for a client.
That’s when he saw her.
She’d just bought a tie and a set of cufflinks-men’s accessories. Nathaniel’s birthday was right around the corner, and for a moment, his heart skipped.
Could she have bought them… for me?
He couldn’t help the excitement that bloomed in his chest.

I knew it. Estella hasn’t given up on me.
He turned to his assistant. “Book a table for my birthday. I want it romantic.”
The assistant blinked in surprise.
With the company in chaos, Mr. Nathaniel still wanted to celebrate?
But he didn’t dare question him.
Back at home, Estella left the door unlocked and waited in the living room.
Jonathan came home at 1 a.m. As soon as she heard the door, she stepped forward to greet him.
He was a bit surprised. “Still awake? You should be resting. Your injury’s only just healed.”
She smiled. “I know. Did you eat dinner?”
He nodded. “I did.”
She checked the time. “You’ve been working so late, you must be hungry again. Let me make you something.”
There hadn’t been time to catch him on weekends, so ambushing him after work was the only option.
Jonathan didn’t refuse. She pulled him inside.
Estella made tacos, adding in his favorite beef.
The rich scent made Jonathan’s appetite flare despite himself. He ended up eating every bite.
Afterward, Estella brought out the gift she’d prepared.
“I got this for you. I hope you like it.”
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. “You’re being awfully kind.”
He opened it. When he saw what was inside, his eyes softened and a rare smile curved his lips.
“Thank you. I love it.”
It was the same brand he usually wore.
She’d noticed.
And that warmed him more than he expected.
Estella relaxed, seeing that he liked it. “You’ve helped me so much—I really wanted to thank you properly.”
Jonathan didn’t like the distance she still tried to keep.
