Chapter 50 The Taste of Freedom

Estella blocked his way. “Nathaniel, don’t come here again.”

Nathaniel looked at her with exaggerated innocence. “But Mom wants to see me, Estella. You know she’s not in great health-she can’t handle any stress. We were married for three years. I can’t just abandon her. And-”

He paused, then gave her a suggestive smile. “Tomorrow’s my birthday. I’d like to have dinner with you.”

He had seen her shopping-saw the tie and cufflinks she bought. Clearly, she meant them for him. Since she wouldn’t make the first move, he was happy to offer her a way back in.

To him, their arguments were nothing. What couple didn’t fight or take a break?

This was just temporary.

But Estella had no patience for his delusions. She threw her coffee straight at him.

“Estella!”

He stumbled back, coffee staining both his coat and slacks.

Estella gave a cold smirk. “Try showing up again, and next time it won’t be just coffee.”

She tossed the cup into a nearby trash bin and stepped into the elevator without looking back.

Nathaniel, soaked and fuming, couldn’t visit Victoria now. And without Estella there to witness him playing the doting son-in-law, there was no point. He stormed into the restroom to clean up before leaving the hospital altogether.

Sunday evening, Estella slipped into a sleek, elegant dress. She curled her hair and applied a full face of makeup. When she looked in the mirror, she smiled-satisfied.

Before marrying Nathaniel, she used to take pride in dressing up. Back then, she had confidence. She knew she was attractive and believed in love. Even if a date didn’t go anywhere, she always felt hopeful.

But after marrying Nathaniel, that confidence slowly wore down. After being criticized for so long, she had started to wonder if maybe she really wasn’t worth loving.

Now, she could feel that confidence returning. Leaving Nathaniel was the best decision she’d ever made.

When she opened the door, Jonathan was standing there-dressed impeccably in the tie and cufflinks she’d given him.

He looked poised and polished, elegance radiating from every inch of him.

His eyes lingered on her, warm and admiring. “Estella, you look stunning tonight.”

Estella smiled. “You’re not so bad yourself.”

Jonathan was the kind of man who would turn heads anywhere-his looks, his bearing. Just walking beside him gave her a flicker of vanity.

They went to a beautifully lit restaurant with soft music, romantic lighting, and incredible food. It felt like a dream.

Halfway through the meal, Nathaniel and Isabelle walked in.

All four spotted each other instantly.

Estella made no effort to greet them. She didn’t want anything to do with Nathaniel anymore. Instead, she calmly continued eating her steak, ignoring them completely.

Nathaniel’s chest tightened at the sight.

He had texted her all afternoon from several new numbers-inviting her to dinner for his birthday. She hadn’t replied to a single one.

And now, here she was, dressed up and smiling… for another man.

Even worse-Jonathan was wearing the exact items she bought at the store. The tie. The cufflinks.

So those weren’t for him. They were for Jonathan.

For a while, Nathaniel had convinced himself that Estella couldn’t truly move on. That she was only using Jonathan to spite him.

But now, the truth hit him like a punch to the gut.

She really didn’t need him anymore.

But if she thought she could escape him, she was dreaming. He didn’t care if she stopped loving him—she would still come back and be his wife.

He turned and left the restaurant, heart pounding.

Isabelle shot a complicated look at Estella, then chased after Nathaniel.
