Chapter 54 Pain and Betrayal

He thought of Estella, and his mood soured.

Picking up a phone with a new SIM card, he called Estella.

The call went straight to voicemail-her phone was off.

Nathaniel felt a wave of frustration and threw the phone aside, plopping down on the couch.

He reached into the cabinet, grabbed a bottle of liquor, and took a swig straight from the bottle.

Whitney, seeing this, couldn’t help but advise, “Mr. Hartwell, drinking like this can harm your health.”

Ignoring her, Nathaniel took another couple of gulps.

Realizing he wasn’t going to listen, Whitney sighed, grabbed her documents, and left the room.

After finishing the bottle, Nathaniel had his driver take him to the building where Estella lived.

He stood in the biting cold, smoking for what felt like an eternity.

At that moment, Jonathan emerged from the building.

Nathaniel’s brow furrowed upon seeing him.

Estella and Jonathan lived in the same building?

Jonathan’s eyes flickered with a hint of mockery when he saw Nathaniel.

I had been unable to reach Estella tonight, so I had asked a friend to find the contact details of her colleagues.

Eventually, I learned about the incident involving Waylon’s son and Estella was implicated.

I immediately called the Javerton Police Department and I found out that Estella had been detained.

Ordinarily, without evidence, Estella wouldn’t have to suffer inside.

But someone had deliberately interfered, preventing her release.

Upon investigation, I discovered that the person was none other than Nathaniel.

He strode over and punched Nathaniel right in the face.

Nathaniel was dazed from the blow.

Furious, he got up to retaliate.

But drunk as he was, he was no match for Jonathan and was quickly knocked to the ground.

Jonathan, not wanting to delay rescuing Estella, merely gave Nathaniel a minor beating.

He looked down at Nathaniel, gasping on the ground, and sneered, “If anything happens to Estella, I’ll make sure you’re finished.”

With that, he hurried to the garage to get his car.

Upon hearing about Estella’s predicament, Nathaniel was stunned for a moment.

Then, he shakily pulled out his phone from his pocket and had his assistant look into the matter regarding Estella.

To his shock, he discovered that the person detained tonight for “harming” Wayne was Estella!

And I had personally instructed the police to take good care of her!

He was so angry he nearly spat up blood and rushed to the police station.

By the time he arrived, Estella had already been bailed out by Jonathan.

Estella had endured some hardship inside.

She was afraid of the dark.

Yet, they had locked her in a pitch-black cell.

For over three hours, she didn’t know how she had made it through.

Seeing Estella’s pale face and cold hands, Jonathan’s heart ached with sympathy.

When Estella saw Nathaniel standing at the door, the fury in her eyes intensified.

I had just learned from the police that the person who had ordered my detention was Nathaniel.

And now, he had the audacity to show up in front of me.

She marched up to him, disregarding the wounds on his face, and slapped him twice.

“Nathaniel Hartwell, you are such a despicable person! I never expected that you and Wayne would be of the same ilk!”

Chapter 54 Pain and Betrayal

These two, under the guise of liking me, had done nothing but harm me.

It is utterly ridiculous!

Nathaniel stood there, taking the blows without dodging or explaining.

He just stared at her with bloodshot eyes, feeling as if something was choking his throat and heart, making him extremely uncomfortable.

Had I known it was Estella, I would never have done such a thing.

Estella didn’t want to look at him another second and started to leave.

But Nathaniel suddenly grabbed her hand.

“Estella…” His voice trembled.

I don’t know what I’m afraid of.

But my instinct told me that if I didn’t say something, I would lose her soon.

“I’m sorry.”

Estella sneered, “What good is an apology? Nathaniel, after being with me for three years, do you know I’m terrified of the dark? Being locked in that black cell, do you have any idea how devastated I was? You think a casual ‘I’m sorry’ can erase the harm I’ve suffered?”

With that, she forcefully shook off his hand and walked away with a look of utter disgust.

Hearing that she was afraid of the dark, Nathaniel stood there, stunned.
