Chapter 67: No Way Back

“I’m not hungry. You two go ahead.” Estella’s tone was flat.

But Nathaniel reached out and gently took her hand. “You don’t have to eat the carbs. Just have some of the dishes. Mom’s been waiting a long time.”

With his forced softness and show of patience, Estella only felt more repulsed.

Victoria chimed in, “Estella, sit down. Don’t waste Nathaniel’s effort.”

Left with no choice, Estella sat at the table.

Nathaniel peeled a shrimp and placed it in her bowl. Estella didn’t even glance at it.

Victoria frowned and put down her fork. “Estella, that’s not how you behave.”

Estella picked the shrimp up with her chopsticks and moved it to the side of the bowl, her face expressionless. “It smells too fishy. I don’t want it.”

Nathaniel felt a flicker of irritation but forced a smile. “Then try something else.”

He placed a portion of greens in her bowl.

Still, Estella didn’t take a single bite.

Nathaniel’s patience was wearing thin.

But then he remembered how he used to criticize her cooking in the exact same way-without ever considering her feelings.

Now that she was treating him the same, he finally understood what it felt like.

Swallowing his frustration, he said patiently, “How about some soup?”

Estella didn’t respond and moved to stand up.

But Nathaniel could no longer contain himself.

He pressed a firm hand down on her shoulder.

His eyes darkened, a sharp glint of threat flashing through. “Sit down. Drink your soup.”

Estella tried to resist.

But his grip only tightened.

Seeing his true colors show again-resorting to force the moment things didn’t go his Estella’s rage surged.

way-

Still, she didn’t want her mother to witness a fight. So she held it in and sat down again.

Only then did Nathaniel’s expression soften once more, a fake smile returning to his face.

“Have some soup.”

Estella didn’t look at him once as she picked up the spoon, her expression frozen with cold indifference.

Victoria, oblivious to Nathaniel’s shift in demeanor, thought it was a sign of reconciliation. She smiled with satisfaction.

After finishing the soup, Estella returned to her room.

That night, someone knocked at her door.

She didn’t want to answer.

But the knocking didn’t stop.

Eventually, she got up and opened the door.

Nathaniel stood there with a pale pink fleece blanket in his hands, his voice gentle. “Zelda said you used to love this blanket. I bought you the same one.”

Estella’s voice was icy. “I don’t need it.”

She tried to shut the door.

But he blocked it with his hand.

Her hand was still healing, and she wasn’t strong enough to fight him.

He easily draped the blanket over her shoulders, smiling in satisfaction. “This color suits your skin tone.”

Then, staring at the simmering anger on her face, he said softly, “Good night, my wife.”

Estella clenched her fists, wanting so badly to slap him across the face.

To hell with that.

She was not his wife.

But he was already gone. The slap never had its chance.

She slammed the door shut and threw the blanket into the trash.

When she woke up, it was already nine in the morning.

She checked her phone-several messages from Selene, asking to meet and talk about office space rentals.

She ran a hand through her hair, replied, and went to get dressed.

Out in the living room, Victoria was at the window trimming a crabapple plant.

Seeing Estella, she scolded, “Why didn’t you wake up earlier to eat breakfast with Nathaniel?”

Estella ignored her and went into the kitchen. She grabbed a taco that had been kept warm in the steamer and took a bite.

She was relieved Nathaniel wasn’t around. She had no desire to see him.

Victoria poured her a glass of milk. Spotting her dressed up, she asked, “You going out?”

Estella nodded. “Yeah. Meeting with my senior to talk about our startup.”
