Chapter 80 Forks, Fire, and Fissures

Wendy narrowed her eyes, clearly skeptical of Estella’s polite refusal.

But she wasn’t the type to back down from a little competition.

She’d driven away plenty of women before-girls who’d dared to show even the faintest interest in Jonathan. In the end, none had lasted under her relentless efforts.

With a sweet, syrupy smile, she leaned in just slightly toward Jonathan and chirped, “Oh, I really admire women like Ms. Estella-so driven, so focused on their careers!”

She then tilted her head, voice dripping with feigned innocence.

“Not like me at all. I’m just a hopeless romantic. I only ever want to be glued to my Jonathan 24/7.”

The moment the words left her lips, Estella’s heart clenched. A familiar weight crushed her chest, making it hard to breathe.

Jonathan, meanwhile, looked like someone had zapped him with a live wire. He immediately shifted away from Wendy, putting clear distance between them.

Wendy’s smile froze mid-face. For a second, she seemed unsure what to do.

But she quickly recovered and tried to salvage the moment-only for Jonathan to abruptly rise from his seat.

“I’m going to the restroom,” he said coldly, walking off without another word or glance.

As he disappeared around the corner, Wendy’s forced smile shattered completely. Her expression turned icy, eyes flashing with open hostility as she stared at Estella.

Across the table, Estella found herself staring down at her untouched food.

She set her fork down, looked over at Selene, and said softly, “I’m full. I’ll head back first.”

She stood up and left without another word.

Selene and Lana exchanged glances.

They’d both picked up on Estella’s shift in mood. Clearly, she had feelings for Jonathan—and judging by Jonathan’s visible distaste for Wendy, those feelings might just be mutual.

If only the two of them could stop being so awkward about it. Watching them circle each other like this was enough to drive a ship full of shippers insane.

Minutes later, Jonathan returned-only to find Estella gone.

His face darkened.

He glanced at Wendy. Still here.

The person who should’ve stayed had left, and the one who ought to be gone lingered like a stubborn ghost.

The food hadn’t been to his liking from the beginning. Now, there was no reason to stay at all.

He checked his watch and said coolly to Jeremy, “It’s getting late. I’m leaving.”

Without waiting for a reply, he turned and walked away.

Jeremy, of course, let him go. His mission was accomplished.

Estella liked Jonathan. That much was obvious now.

All it took was a bit of a nudge from Jonathan and they’d probably be together. But knowing how stiff and traditional his little brother could be, Jeremy was already planning the next push.

Back in her office, Estella stared at her ringing phone.

Nathaniel.

She’d blocked his number weeks ago, but her mother had secretly restored it-and warned her not to block it again unless she wanted a war.

So Estella reluctantly picked up.

“Estella, are you coming home for dinner tonight? I asked Zelda to make your favorite dishes. And if there’s anything else you want, just let me know-I’ll have her whip it up too,” Nathaniel said gently, his tone dripping with warmth.

It was like he’d turned into a completely different person lately.

He asked about her meals. Her health. Her work. He was attentive and thoughtful in ways he never had been during their three-year marriage.

Back then, Nathaniel had been cold, distant, and emotionally unavailable.

His heart had always belonged to Isabelle. He couldn’t let her go-no matter how many times she broke into their lives, leaving wounds Estella was forced to carry alone.
