Chapter 79 Spices, Suspicions, and Signals

Both their hands froze.

At the same time, they looked up-eyes meeting in midair.

For a split second, time stood still.

Estella’s lashes quivered faintly.

Jonathan gazed at her, his eyes deep as the sea, full of emotions too complex to name.

Estella was the first to look away. She withdrew her fork.

Jonathan hesitated briefly before picking up a slice of potato and putting it into his mouth.

Across the table, Wendy’s brows furrowed. Her sharp gaze caught something she couldn’t ignore.

Jonathan had always been a known germaphobe.

As a child, if someone else touched his food-or worse, used his fork-he’d treat it like it was cursed. Not even family could change that rule.

But just now, Jonathan’s fork had clearly touched Estella’s. And instead of being upset, he kept eating as if nothing had happened.

Wendy’s hand clenched tightly around her fork.

A deep, unmistakable instinct surged up: something was going on between Jonathan and this woman named Estella. Something much deeper than casual acquaintance.

Was it romantic?

Was Jonathan in love with her?

Were they secretly involved?

A swarm of questions tangled in Wendy’s head, leaving her increasingly unsettled.

Then came Jeremy’s voice, deliberately loud and teasing: “Jonathan, look at this table full of food. If nothing’s to your liking, why don’t we head somewhere else? There’s no shortage of restaurants around here.”

Jonathan looked up briefly, scanning the spicy dishes on the table. Then, as if in passing, his eyes flicked toward Estella.

She was sitting quietly, her gaze lowered, toying with her utensils as though she hadn’t heard a thing.

Jonathan’s voice was calm. “No need. This is fine.”

It had been a long time since he’d sat down for a meal with Estella-especially after their argument. Despite the crowd, the spicy food, the general discomfort, just being able to see her across the table made all of it bearable.

Jeremy smirked privately.

Just as I thought. He’s totally soft when it comes to Estella. Even if this table were covered in poison, the guy would still eat it without a word-so long as she’s sitting there.

At that exact moment, Estella suddenly choked on a fiery red chili pepper.

The sharp heat shot through her sinuses, making her cough violently.

Instinctively, she reached for her water glass-only to find it completely empty.

Still coughing, she glanced around for the water pitcher.

But before she could act, Jonathan had already lifted it and poured her a full glass.

She took it immediately and drank in large gulps. The cool liquid soothed her burning throat, and she let out a soft breath once the pain subsided.

She looked up and said, “Thank you.”

Jonathan, eyes lowered, met her gaze briefly and gave a quiet, “Mm.”

Wendy watched this entire exchange like she was about to burst into flames.

Jonathan, the man who wouldn’t lift a finger for anyone-now pouring water for a woman? Carefully? Naturally?

Her chest seethed with jealousy.
