Chapter 82 Trapped in the Dark

Wendy hit the floor with a loud thud.

Estella stood above her, expression frosty. “Don’t ever come for me again. I’m not some pushover you can bully. Even a rabbit will bite when it’s cornered.”

Without another glance, she turned and calmly resumed her work.

Wendy seethed.

She had come to humiliate Estella, but instead she’d ended up on the ground-rejected, insulted, powerless. That humiliation twisted into rage. Her eyes darted around the office, calculating, and then she remembered something.

Selene’s voice echoed in her mind: “The outer door can’t be opened from the inside once it’s locked.”

And on the elevator wall earlier, she’d seen a notice: Power will be shut off at 11 PM.

A wicked idea sparked.

If she locked the outer door… Estella would be stuck inside all night. In the dark.

Her eyes landed on Estella’s phone on the table. Estella, still turned away, had no idea.

Wendy snatched the phone.

Then, silent as a shadow, she slipped out.

At the elevator, she flung Estella’s phone into the trash bin and disappeared down the hallway.

At 11 PM, the office building was abruptly swallowed by darkness.

The sudden blackout stunned Estella. She reached instinctively for her phone to turn on the flashlight-but her hand swept across an empty desk.

Her phone was gone.

The darkness around her thickened, pressing in from every side.

Her breathing quickened.

She was terrified of the dark.

Every shadow felt like a threat, every corner a trap.

She forced herself to walk toward the door, heart pounding. But when she grabbed the handle and twisted-it didn’t budge.

She yanked it harder. Nothing.

The door had been locked from the outside.

Panic bloomed in her chest.

Her father’s suicide flashed in her mind-the nightmare that never truly left her.

She collapsed to the floor, arms wrapped around her head, shaking uncontrollably.

Elsewhere in the building, Selene was on the phone with Lana.

“I’ve been trying to reach Estella, but she’s not picking up. Can you check on her for me?” Selene asked, worry thick in her voice.

Lana had just finished packing up for the night. “Sure! I’m still in the building. I’ll head up there now.”

She set her files aside and headed for the stairs.

At that moment, Jonathan-who had been on his way out-overheard the call.

He paused, frowning. “What’s wrong with Estella?”

“Selene can’t reach her,” Lana replied. “I’m just going to check.”

Jonathan’s heart skipped a beat. A surge of unease gripped him.

“I’ll go. You head home.”

Without waiting for her to respond, he bolted toward the stairs, already dialing Estella’s number.

No answer.

He kept climbing, phone still ringing, anxiety rising.

As he reached the right floor, a faint ringing caught his attention-coming from a trash bin nearby.

Frowning, he hurried over, turned on his flashlight, and peered inside.

There it was. Estella’s phone.
