Chapter 83 The Rescue

Finished

Estella slumped against the door, vision blurred with tears. Just as she was beginning to believe no one would come, footsteps echoed from the other side.

A voice slipped through the crack: “Estella?”

“Mr. Jonathan?” she gasped, hope flooding her voice. She pressed her palms to the door, trembling. “Mr. Jonathan, the door’s locked from the outside-I can’t get out!”

“Don’t worry,” Jonathan said gently. “I’ll get you out of there.”

Without another word, he called the building management.

Soon, someone arrived to unlock the door.

As the lock clicked and the door finally opened, Estella stumbled out-and without thinking, threw her arms around Jonathan.

She had truly been terrified.

Jonathan held her and soothed her quietly. “It’s okay now. You’re safe.”

Once she had calmed down, he led her downstairs to his office and poured her a warm glass of

water.

Estella sat on the couch, sipping slowly. The fear in her chest began to loosen.

Then her phone rang.

Jonathan’s eyes drifted to the screen. When he saw the name flashing there, his entire body

tensed.

He curled his hands into fists, nails digging into his palms. A wave of jealousy rose in him-hot, bitter, and uncontrollable.

But he swallowed it down.

Years of discipline held him in place. He stood and walked to the side, each step feeling like he was dragging iron weights.

The phone kept ringing. Loud, sharp. Jarring.

Estella hesitated for a long moment. Finally, with a shaking hand, she answered.

Nathaniel’s voice exploded through the line, filled with suspicion and rage.

“Estella, what the hell is going on with you? Didn’t we agree you’d come home for dinner tonight? Where are you now? Don’t tell me you’re with that man again! Estella-unbelievable! You’ll regret this. I swear you will!”

Estella had barely recovered from her ordeal. The call hit her like a freight train.

She was exhausted-mentally, physically, emotionally.

Clutching her phone, she sat frozen, unable to speak, unable to think. It felt like the world around her had gone dark all over again.

Nathaniel, taking her silence for guilt, grew even more furious. He hung up in a rage.

The beeping of the disconnected line echoed faintly, but Estella didn’t move.

Instead, she let out a slow, trembling breath.

Somehow, the end of that call brought relief.

She lowered the phone and leaned back on the couch, eyes empty, staring into space.

Nothing about Nathaniel surprised her anymore.

Every memory tied to him reeked of bitterness and pain. The way he had treated her during their marriage, how his heart had never left Isabelle, how he had used that love to hurt Estella over and over.

And yet, life had tied them together with knots she couldn’t untangle.

He had promised to change. Said he’d become better-for her.

But all of it had just been another manipulation. Another trick to drag her back.

That man would never care about anyone but himself.

Jonathan, who had quietly waited for her to finish the call, hadn’t spoken a word.

Estella steadied her breathing and finally looked at him.

“Mr. Jonathan,” she said softly, “thank you… If you hadn’t shown up tonight, I don’t know what I would’ve done.”

Jonathan’s face remained hard. He didn’t want her thanks.

What he wanted… was her safety.
