“You’re not afraid he’ll hurt you?”

Jonathan’s voice was low but tense, carrying a weight that Estella couldn’t ignore. He knew the type-men who lost all reason the second things didn’t go their way. As a lawyer, he had seen enough of them to recognize the danger.

Estella hesitated, then slowly lowered her head. “This is my personal matter. I believe I can handle it myself. You don’t need to worry. And… thank you again for everything tonight.”

Jonathan clenched his jaw.

Even after everything, she was still pushing him away. She would rather face this alone than accept help from him. Did she really not see how much he cared?

That quiet rejection stung more than she realized.

He didn’t say another word as he drove her home.

When she stepped out of the car, she offered a polite, uneasy smile. “Thanks for the ride. Goodnight.”

Jonathan didn’t respond.

He sat there, unmoving, his eyes cold, unreadable. Estella felt her heart tighten. She had a feeling she’d upset him, but now wasn’t the time to explain. Without another word, she turned and walked toward the Hartwell estate.

Jonathan stared at her back, his hands gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.

He didn’t drive away.

For an entire hour, he sat there in the dark, eyes fixed on the place where she’d disappeared, chest full of things he couldn’t say.

Only then did he finally start the engine and leave.

The Hartwell villa was silent. Her mother and Zelda were likely already asleep.

Estella opened the door carefully, not wanting to make a sound. She hated the dark, so the moment she reached the entryway, she flicked on the light.

A soft glow filled the hallway.

She took off her shoes and padded quietly into the living room-only to freeze.

Nathaniel was sitting on the couch.

His face was ashen, expression grim, and his whole body reeked of alcohol.

Estella’s heart dropped.

She knew this version of him-the brooding silence, the simmering rage. There would be no reasoning with him tonight.

She turned and tried to walk quickly to her room, praying he wouldn’t follow.

But she was too late.

Nathaniel sprang up and grabbed her wrist.

Before she could react, he shoved her-hard.

She stumbled back, crashing into the couch. Her head slammed against the backrest with a sickening thud, pain exploding across her skull as her vision blurred and stars burst before her

eyes.

Then he was on her.

Hands wrapped tightly around her throat.

His voice was a snarl. “Out this late-who were you with? Huh? Some other man? Is that it?”

Estella couldn’t breathe. Her lungs burned. She clawed at his hands, legs thrashing, desperate for air.

But he was too strong.

In one final effort, she grabbed the nearest pillow and struck him with it over and over. Finally, he let go.

She gasped for air, coughing violently as oxygen returned to her body.

Then, without a second thought, she staggered to her feet and rushed for her room.

Just as she reached the door and tried to shut it, a powerful force stopped it.

Nathaniel had followed.
