Estella couldn’t hold back the fury and sorrow any longer. Her hands trembling, she slowly pulled off her mask.

Her once fair face was swollen and blotched with red.

Then she lifted her chin-revealing deep, ugly bruises along her neck.

“Mom, look carefully!” she cried, voice raw and cracking. “This is what he did to me last night after drinking! You want me to go back to a man who can do this? You still want me to remarry him?”

Tears streamed down her face, unstoppable, like floodgates finally burst open.

Victoria stared, stunned into silence. She shook her head, blinking rapidly as if trying to make sense of what she was seeing. “No… That’s not possible… Nathaniel would never hit you…”

In her mind, Nathaniel had always been the perfect son-in-law-gentle, respectful, considerate.

But then a shadow crossed her expression.

“Estella,” she said, tone suddenly sharp, “were you out on a date last night? Did Nathaniel find out? He’s a man, a normal man who loves you! Of course he’d get jealous! Maybe he lost control for a second, but if you hadn’t provoked him…”

“Mom!” Estella screamed, nearly breaking down. “I’ve told you again and again—we’re divorced! We have nothing to do with each other anymore! Even if I want to marry someone else, that’s my right! He has no say in it!”

She choked out her words, shaking with rage. “If you hadn’t kept interfering in my life and dragging me back into his mess, I’d be free of him by now!”

But Victoria remained unmoved. “No matter what, you can’t be with another man. That’s the problem here. You brought this on yourself. If you’d stayed clean, none of this would’ve happened.”

Estella froze.

That single sentence sliced through her like ice,

Victoria had always been a woman of traditional values. To her, marriage was sacred-a lifelong duty and promise. A woman was supposed to forgive, to endure, to never walk away unless the man committed some “unforgivable” crime. Even then, if he apologized, if he “tried,” she should take him back.

Chapter 86 No More Excuses

:.

To Victoria, being a good wife meant being endlessly tolerant.

When Estella divorced Nathaniel, Victoria saw it as shameful. Embarrassing. Unforgivable. And ever since, she’d made it her mission to “set things right.”

Estella suddenly felt hollow.

How could this be her mother? How could the person who gave her life want her to go back to someone who nearly took it?

She thought of all the stories in the news-women beaten within inches of their lives, seeking shelter from their families, only to be pushed right back into hell “for their own good.” Parents apologizing to abusive husbands. Families raising daughters to be obedient wives, not independent human beings.

She used to think those stories were distant. Tragic, yes—but far from her world.

Now, she knew better.

Her own mother was one of those people.

Estella was bone-tired.

But she wasn’t going to forgive Nathaniel. She wouldn’t let him threaten her anymore.

If she could convince her mother to leave with her, he’d lose his leverage.
