I’m
Tears streamed down Nathaniel’s face as he dropped to his knees. His voice cracked as he sobbed, “Mom, last night was all my fault-I lost control! Please, I know I was wrong, begging you to forgive me. I drank too much. I didn’t know what I was doing.
“But when I saw Estella being dropped off by another man, it felt like knives stabbing into my chest. I couldn’t control my emotions. And when I sobered up and remembered what I did-I wanted to kill myself on the spot! Please, just give me one more chance. I swear it’ll never happen again!”
Victoria sighed heavily and shook her head. “You really are a foolish boy.”
Despite the ache in her heart for her daughter, she still wished desperately for Estella to reconcile with the man before her.
“I can’t forgive you on Estella’s behalf,” she said with a deep frown. “Only she can decide that. If you truly want redemption, then go apologize to her sincerely yourself.”
Nathaniel’s heart eased slightly. So the mother’s side is covered, he thought.
He nodded quickly. “Don’t worry, Mom! I’ll apologize to Estella myself. Even if she stabs me in the chest, I won’t flinch.”
Victoria gave an approving nod, then pointed down the hall toward Estella’s room. “Go, then. Right now. Be honest, be humble, and don’t hurt her again.”
Nathaniel approached the door.
But before he could knock, it opened.
“Estella…” he called softly, voice trembling, eyes red with emotion.
He reached out to take her hand.
Estella immediately stepped back, putting distance between them.
His face filled with remorse. “I was wrong. I’m truly sorry. Punish me however you want—just
don’t shut me out.”
Estella’s lips curled into a smile-but it was cold. Distant, Hollow,
“Oh? Punish you however I want?” she said, her tone as icy as her stare. “Then go
die.”
The words cut like a blade.

Victoria hurried over, alarmed. “Estella, don’t be so harsh. Nathaniel already knows he did
wrong.”
Estella’s eyes flashed. “Oh, he knows. But he won’t change.
“What happens the next time I go on a date? He’ll beat me again, right? Isn’t that how it goes, Mr. Nathaniel?”
She locked her gaze on him, unrelenting.
Nathaniel looked devastated. “Estella, you know how I feel. You’re just trying to provoke me- aren’t you?”
Victoria’s tone grew sharp. “What is wrong with you? Why are you being so stubborn and unreasonable? Can’t you sit down and talk like adults?”
Estella cut her off. “Talk? There’s nothing to talk about.
“Since the divorce, we’ve been strangers. And after what he did last night-we’re enemies.
