“So don’t go wasting your life competing with men,” Victoria nagged. “What really matters is finding an easy, stable job and putting your energy into marriage. For a woman, marrying a good man is the most important thing-more than anything else!”

Estella knew that if she kept arguing, it would turn into another full-blown fight.

So she stayed quiet.

Victoria cast her a sideways glance but kept on muttering, “Don’t roll your eyes at me. I’ve eaten more salt than you’ve eaten rice. Every word I’ve said is golden wisdom!”

Estella sighed and shook her head. She picked up the hot water bottle from the table. “Mom, just take a rest. I’ll go get you some warm water.”

With that, she turned and walked out of the room.

She loved her mother deeply-but that didn’t mean she had to accept all her outdated beliefs.

If she let those ideas run her life, she’d never find peace.

Three

years of marriage had already shown her exactly what kind of man Nathaniel was.

She wasn’t going back to being someone’s housemaid.

With less than a week until the New Year, Estella returned to her rented apartment and tidied up, stocking up on decorations and seasonal goods, preparing to bring her mother over to celebrate.

After tossing out the trash and heading upstairs, she ran into Jonathan.

He was just about to enter his unit when he saw her-and paused in surprise.

“You moved back?”

Estella nodded. “Yeah. I haven’t convinced my mom yet, but this time, I’m not backing down.”

At her words, a faint ripple stirred in Jonathan’s calm eyes, like ice thawing on a spring lake. A gentle smile tugged at his lips.

He asked softly, “Wanna grab a late bite together?”

Estella blinked in surprise, then said, “I didn’t buy groceries today, and there’s not much in the

Jonathan agreed without hesitation, and the two headed toward the elevator together.

Outside, the winter wind was biting, cutting against their faces like knives.

As they stepped into the night, a sharp gust swept through. Estella instinctively shrank into her coat, her slender neck turning red from the cold.

Jonathan turned toward her and, without thinking, unwrapped his thick scarf and held it out. “It’s freezing. Take this. Don’t catch a cold.”

Estella stared at the scarf-still warm from his body—and hesitated.

It felt a little too intimate to accept something like this.

But the cold was unforgiving. After a brief internal struggle, she took the scarf and carefully wrapped it around her neck.

The moment it touched her skin, a familiar warmth and Jonathan’s scent enveloped her.

Her cheeks flushed with heat, as if a spark had been lit beneath her skin.

Jonathan noticed she hadn’t refused-and it quietly pleased him.

The heaviness that had lingered over his heart these past days seemed to finally lift.

As they walked out of the community gate, Estella looked up and smiled. “How about barbecue tonight? Maybe a little drink too. So no driving-let’s just grab a cab.”

Jonathan nodded gently, his voice warm. “Sounds good.”

They hailed a taxi and got in.

The driver was a cheerful, chatty uncle who couldn’t help glancing in the mirror at the attractive pair in the backseat.

With a grin, he said, “You two make such a handsome couple! Locals?”

Estella opened her mouth to clarify that they weren’t actually dating-but before she could speak, Jonathan answered calmly, “I’m not from around here. But she is.”

Estella turned to look at him in surprise.
