Jonathan kept his mild smile, offering no direct response to the driver’s teasing.

But his calm, nonchalant silence only made it seem like the driver had hit the mark.

The driver burst out laughing, then added with a wink, “Smart guy! You know how to seize the moment. No wonder you’ve got such a pretty girlfriend. Spend a warm, festive New Year together this year, and maybe next year she’ll be your wife!”

A wave of heat shot up from Estella’s feet to her scalp. Her face turned bright red in an instant. Embarrassment crawled all over her like ants, and she wished she could just disappear into the

seat.

But what made it even worse-Jonathan actually nodded, seriously, as if in agreement.

When the cab finally pulled to a stop, Estella practically leapt out. She spun around, flustered. “Why didn’t you say something?!”

Jonathan stepped out unhurriedly behind her, his eyes catching the rosy tip of her nose, flushed from cold and embarrassment. A subtle smirk played at his lips.

He cleared his throat and said lightly, “Explaining would’ve only made it worse. He’d probably have asked more questions. Sometimes, it’s easier to just play along.”

Estella froze. The complaints bubbling in her chest got stuck somewhere in her throat.

Before the silence grew awkward, Jonathan gestured ahead toward a brightly lit barbecue place. “Come on. That one looks good.”

Estella gave a stiff nod and followed him inside like a dazed puppet.

Since neither of them handled spicy food well, they agreed easily on a simple platter.

As Estella marked the order sheet with a pencil, she glanced up. “Do you eat lamb?”

Jonathan was wiping plates meticulously with a tissue. Without looking up, he replied, “Mm- hmm.”

“What about mushrooms?” she asked next.

“Yeah.”

Their teamwork was seamless-one ordering, one prepping.

Their good looks didn’t go unnoticed. Several nearby tables couldn’t help but sneak glances

Some people whispered to each other, curious about the striking pair. A young woman nearby couldn’t contain her excitement. She quickly snapped a photo and uploaded it online with a caption: “Caught a couple! Can’t believe how cute they are!”

Just then, Jonathan’s phone rang.

He glanced down. The caller ID read Wendy.

Without a second thought, he declined the call and switched to airplane mode.

Estella looked up, curious. “Why aren’t you answering?”

Jonathan’s expression didn’t change. Calmly, he said, “Spam call. Not worth picking up.”

Then he poured her tea as if nothing had happened.

“Oh…”

Estella responded softly and didn’t press

further.

Soon, a waiter arrived, pushing a cart of dishes and neatly arranging them on the table.

Once the food was set, Jonathan picked up the fork and began cooking.

He had a meticulous streak.

Every slice of meat he placed on the grill had a precise cook time, and he removed each one with zero delay-never a second too early or late.

Estella watched his focused expression with quiet amusement.

One by one, Jonathan placed perfectly grilled bites into her bowl.

Estella raised her hands in surrender. “Okay, okay! That’s enough! I can’t eat this much!”

But Jonathan ignored her protests, continuing to serve her with steady, deliberate movements.

At a nearby table, a girl noticed what he was doing and pouted at her boyfriend. “Hmph! Every time we come out for barbecue, I’m the one cooking for you. Can’t you be thoughtful just once and do it for me?”
