A few months into dating, men start to withdraw.

After marriage, they simply collapse into complacency-waiting for their wives to carry the load.
Estella knew this well.
Right now, Jonathan hadn’t even confessed his feelings. They were still caught in that ambiguous, delicate stage-so naturally, he was full of patience and attentiveness.
But if they truly got together, would he stay the same?
Would Jonathan someday turn into another Nathaniel?
Lost in the whirl of her thoughts, she was startled by Jonathan’s gentle voice. “You spacing out? Come on, eat.”
Estella snapped back to reality and gave her head a quick shake, brushing away the tangled questions in her mind.
She picked up her fork again and resumed eating.
Meanwhile, at home, Wendy stared at her phone in seething frustration. Another call to Jonathan had gone unanswered. Her chest heaved with fury.
Her leg had mostly healed-she’d already been discharged from the hospital.
Her father wanted her to return home for the holidays.
But Jonathan hadn’t left town yet, so neither would she.
She just couldn’t understand it. She had given Jonathan so much-why did he still treat her like she didn’t matter?
Furious, she scrolled through Twitter, trying to distract herself.
Then, suddenly, a photo popped up that froze her blood.
Jonathan and Estella-together at a barbecue dinner.
In the photo, Jonathan was looking at Estella with soft eyes and a faint smile on his lips.

It was like a dagger to Wendy’s heart, twisting deep and cruel.
“No… how can this be…”
She stared blankly at the screen, disbelief and anguish dancing in her tear-filled eyes.

Her legs had barely recovered, and Jonathan had already run off to have dinner with Estella?
Did she mean nothing to him?
The rage flared inside her, burning hotter with every passing second. It threatened to consume her.
Her hatred for Estella surged again, gnawing at the last of her sanity.
Why? Why did Estella always get everything so easily?
Why did Jonathan favor her, while Wendy’s sincerity was met with indifference?
The questions echoed in her mind like a curse, driving her to the edge.
No.
She couldn’t let Estella steal Jonathan away.
Wendy set down her phone, an idea suddenly blooming in her mind.
Back at the restaurant, Jonathan’s phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID showed: Mr. Morton.
He answered.
“Jonathan, Wendy just tried to commit suicide.”
Mr. Morton’s voice was tight with panic. “Can you come see her right now? I’m afraid something might really happen to her.”
Jonathan blinked, surprised—but didn’t seem alarmed.
He suspected this was just another one of Wendy’s tricks to get him to come to her.
His voice was calm, even cold. “Mr. Morton, I’m busy right now and can’t come. But I’ll call 911 and make sure she receives emergency care. I’ll also hire a full-time nurse to look after her in the hospital.”
